I am completely delighted with "The Little Guides" series. The format is extremely user friendly, and each guide is packed with useful and interesting information. I enjoy reading them, but my 6 year old daughter gives them the most use. While the guides are written at an adult level, there is plenty that she can read and understand. I currently own "Sharks," "Birds," "Mammals," and "Space," and have ordered "Reptiles," "Whales," and "Flowers."
"Sharks" is divided into three parts; the first includes topics on the world of sharks, shark behavior, and shark anatomy. Shark anatomy is very informative, covering such topics as the shark's skeletal system, gills, teeth, etc. Part two covers a wide variety of sharks (about 100 different species), and part three covers shark and human interaction, including shark attacks, the human threat to sharks, and where to observe sharks. The guide is extremely well done, with over 500 colorful illustrations.
This is a great resource of adults as well as children!

The Delightful Miss Carrie Review

The Delightful Miss Carrie
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I felt like I was transported in time to Carrie's world.
I laughed out loud when Carrie transplanted her neighbor's flowers in her mother's yard as an "innocent act of kindness". I felt the excitement from Carrie and her sister Inez in their thrilling gold mine adventures. My heart broke for Carrie's daughter Dorothy when she kept wondering "Why doesn't Daddy come home". And the ending...the beautiful ending...let's just say "you better have tissues handy".
So much excitement! So much tragedy! So much character! Carrie was such a strong-willed woman that saw the positive and the humor in everything. I will always admire her and carry her close in my heart.
Thank you Sonja for how you brought the gray and gold threads of the Delightful Miss Carrie to life. I plan to read this precious book out-loud with my daughters so they can understand how you can embrace life with a smile through all the ups and downs it brings.

The Delightful Miss Carrie is a wonderful adventure. After the death of her beloved mother in 1897 when Carrie was just eight years of age, her father came to her and said, "I have discovered gold...we are rich!" Her true-life adventures take us from the gold mines of California through the devastating San Francisco earthquake to fabulous London tea parties. Carrie says in her memoir: "One day in the winter of 1910...I espied a face which made a deep impression on me...I had no experience in the art of love, but when I glimpsed his face, I was smitten. I could feel each beat of my heart as I looked at this stranger across the crowded ferry...I fell in love." Then, on the earth-shattering day of December 7, 1941, Carrie witnessed the terrible destruction of Pearl Harbor. She calls these exciting and tragic events her "life tapestry of gold and gray threads." You will laugh and weep as you follow her story from youth through old age. Carrie Watson Dinsmore was truly a delightful woman.

Too smart for a guilty pleasure and too fun for a "good-for-you" book, anyone who worked through the dot com boom and bust will love HugoSF. Actually, anyone who was too young to work during those days should read this as a cautionary tale. I felt like I personally knew half of Hannan's characters back in the day. And as an ex San Franciscan, the descriptions of the City made me wistful....and shudder. Oh that 30 Stockton bus......

:15 Fifteen Seconds: The Great California Earthquake of 1989 Review

:15 Fifteen Seconds: The Great California Earthquake of 1989
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fifteen Seconds is a photo journal that commemorates the 1989 earthquake. The book is a series of pictures, quotes and captions that are put together to show the reader how terribly destructive the 1989 San Francisco earthquake really was. This is a book definitely worth reading. It gives the reader a good view of what happened on October 17, 1989. If you want detailed information in written form, this is not a book to read. If you enjoy learning through art and photographs, this book will be a fun and interesting read.
With photographs, quotes, and captions this book tries to show you how it might seem if you were in the position of one of the many victims of the earthquake. Fifteen Seconds has many quotes that give you even more of a feel for how the victims viewed their situations and how this disaster affected so many lives of so many innocent people.
For example on page 35 a Santa Cruz resident compared the earthquake to her experience in a hurricane and tornado. She found the earthquake to be much worse.
The book sends a message through every single picture. Each picture is individual and has its own significance in its own way. The book Fifteen Seconds starts out with pictures of the great World Series game that was disrupted by the tremendous tremble. It also features a large section on the Marina District fire. Damage to the the Bay Bridge is included as well as the memorial services after the quake.
Even though all of the pictures are still without movement, as I read this book it was almost like I was reliving the great catastrophe of 1989. I could just feel the ground shaking below my feet and I could watch as the Marina fire started to burn. I could just imagine the tears streaming down my neighbor's face as if I were at the memorial service for a loved one who had died. Every picture is worth a thousand words.
One of the pictures that made the biggest impression on me is a picture of I-880. The picture on page 18 and 19 of the book gave me a good idea of how destructive this quake really was. In the picture there is a long stretch of highway which at one point used to be straight. In the picture the highway is twisted and turned and formed into an almost water wave like shape. There is smoke rising from the newly formed wave of cement and the caption read simply enough:
"Smoke rises from the mangled top span of I-880 in Oakland minutes after it collapsed, killing forty two people"
That small little note on the bottom of page 18 sums up the picture in what I thought just the best way possible. It tells me what I need to know and lets the picture tell the rest of the story as my imagination carried me away. There is also a quote on that page that read like this:
"I said to myself ` Lord don't let this span collapse,' and just about that time the span collapsed" Dave Rieman
That small quote tells whatever part of the story that had been left out. It tells me something about the people who had actually been there and actually experienced it. It brings me that last missing piece of the puzzle and really pulls me into the scene.

Read this book in one sitting. Just couldn't but it down. Wheather you lived during the time between 1987-88, in or near San Fancisco or not, we were all touched in some way regarding HIV/AIDS. The author does not focus on the horrors of AIDS in this personal account of his experiences, hopes, and trying to stay "alive" during this time, but rather shares with his readers a very honest and open expression of his life and encounters with others around him. His interviews with some of the most interesting artists and perfomers are insightful and brutally honest, leaving us with a better understanding of those he interviewed, their lives without the glare of bright lights and what was to become of some of them. A must read...

In BUT THE SHOW WENT ON, (the prequel to his best-selling memoir, POSTCARDS FROM PALM SPRINGS) author Robert Julian revisits 17 essays, interviews, and feature stories he created for the San Francisco Sentinel over 20 years ago. Each entry is illuminated by a new backstory that provides a perspective only made possible by the passage of time. With the same take-no-prisoners attitude that propelled thousands of readers through POSTCARDS FROM PALM SPRINGS in one sitting, Robert Julian once again establishes the value of a smart mouth, sharp eye, and snappy rejoinder.

Jenny Read was an articulate and talented artist who died too young in 1976. This book comprised of letters, journal entries, dreams, drawings and photographs captures her life as an artist and woman. She was a talented artist in San Francisco in the Seventies and she was very much part of the art scene there. She also stood apart from aspects of the counterculture-she attended Church services and rejected the cynicism of many of her peers. She was passionate about her art and about growing as an artist. This book captures her unique art and gentle spirit. (She is portrayed in the Dancing Saints Mural at St. Gregory's Church in San Francisco.)

BEST PLACES SAN FRANCISCO is a great guide to the Bay Area, including Marin County, the East Bay, and the Wine Country. However, the radio station listing is not up to date; in fact, it was outdated when this book was published in 2000, and should be taken like the humor in such movies/TV shows as SABRINA, THE TEENAGE WITCH, 13 GOING ON 30, DRIVE ME CRAZY, SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE, ALONG CAME POLLY, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, FRIENDS, HARVARD MAN, WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, AMERICAN WEDDING, THE SWEETEST THING, and/or GARFIELD: A TALE OF TWO KITTIES. Despite this shortcoming, I strongly recommend this book.

San Francisco in Fiction: Essays in a Regional Literature Review

San Francisco in Fiction: Essays in a Regional Literature
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a high school English teacher who is designing a course on the literature of the Bay Area, I have found this collection of critical essays indespensible. The introduction sets the stage, tying together the landscape, history, and culture of the San Francisco area in order to generate a cohesive view of the literature of this region. The key question here is what makes the literature of the Bay Area distinct? What unifies the literature of this region? Fine and Skenazy present a view of Bay Area writing that ranges from the post-gold rush, pre-earthquake days of Mark Twain, Bret Harte, and Ambrose Bierce to modern voices such as Amy Tan, Richard Rodriguez and Maxine Hong Kingston. They illustrate the ways in which the literary scene of the Bay Area has grown and transformed, moving from the newsapaper articles and short stories written from a predominantly white male perspective, to a more inclusive, broder regional identity. Incidently, their definition of "San Francisco stories" is admittedly wide-ranging; they have included writers from as far afield as Santa Cruz to the south and Sacramento to the west. The essays feature analyses of the work of Frank Norris, Jack London, Dashiell Hammett, William Saroyan, Jack Kerouac, Wallace Stegner and others I've mentioned above.
While my interests in the subject at hand are mostly academic, I imagine that anyone interested in the rich--if brief--history of the Bay Area would enjoy reading these essays. As a collection, the essays raise and adress interesting questions about how a place can shape writing. They also ask the reader to look at the character of the Bay Area and consider why it is as it is--unique and complex, a land of travelers, heading forever west, hoping to strike it rich.

"In the beginning there was the bay, the land, the forty-three hills, the coastline down to Monterey, the strip of mountains, the quiet valley behind, the vast ocean, the hidden faults." And with the landscape came the stories, as Paul Skenazy and David Fine note in their introduction to this new anthology of essays. San Francisco is as much a place in the mind as on the map; if the terrain set the stage for the stories, the stories have helped remake our perceptions of the space.
These twelve essays explore the relationship between place and prose—between San Francisco the city and San Francisco the territory of fiction. From the Gold Rush times of Mark Twain and Bret Harte, through the Prohibition Era of Dashiell Hammett to the Beat days of Jack Kerouac and the present works of writers like Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, and Arturo Islas, San Francisco has been blessed with great writers who have given life to the land in their fiction. These essays engage the history and geography, ethnic, gender, and class conflicts, and stylistic range of the fiction. They demonstrate how authors as various as Jack London, Gertrude Atherton, Frank Norris, William Saroyan, James D. Houston, Joan Didion, and Wallace Stegner have re-created and revised our understanding of this region.

Frommer's Irreverent Guide to San Francisco Review

Frommer's Irreverent Guide to San Francisco
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I recently visited San Francisco, and we absolutely fell in love with the city. One of the main reasons we loved the trip so much is because we received expert advice from this little book.
First, it helps shape the genre of the trip by advising you on what to avoid. For example, unless you want your trip to be completely filled with dime-a-dozen memories, the book honestly advises you to stay away from places like Fishermans Wharf and Alcatraz. The pulse of the city is not to be found there. It also tells you how to avoid wasting time on inefficient transportation and wasting money on touristy restaurants that have a lot of press without the goods. In other words, this book is not afraid to say to you, "Hey, don't go to that restaurant because (a) it's overpriced and (b) the food stinks." In a city that's as diverse as San Francisco, we found that having advice about what to avoid was just as helpful, if not more so, than advice about what to see.
Second, it tells you what to wear. We went to San Francisco in late July/early August, and you would be surprised at how you need to dress for San Francisco weather during these "summer" months.
Third, it gives you an insider's perspective on what is truly distinctive about San Francisco's city culture. As such, we were able to visit places that we ordinarily would miss if we were to plan our trip solely by the other city guides we had in our possession. For example, there are many restaurants, shops, cafes, and entire neighborhoods which are the delight of San Francisco locals, and we were really pleased to be able to soak up some of that local mood. This feature is what we found most valuable about Frommer's Irreverent Guide.
Finally, a word of caution. Frommer's Irreverent Guide is not meant to be a complete guidebook. It is best used as a supplement to another San Francisco guide book that gives the fine-print details. That said, however, the Irreverent Guide is great at what it aims to do-viz., to help set your frame of mind and plan the mood of the trip to be truly San Franciscan.

You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. "Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world. It's easy to leave your heart in one of America's most beautiful and visited cities, but you don't have to follow the crowds to do it. Before They Were Champions: The San Francisco 49ers 1958 Season Review

Before They Were Champions: The San Francisco 49ers 1958 Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Before They Were Champions," the unfolding of The San Francisco 49ers' 1958 Season, is not just the story of a football team coming of age, but a stirring, candid journal of a roller-coaster season flowing from the pen of a 49ers' fan who grew up in that period.
The author, who attended 49er games as a youngster, faithfully kept a diary and souvenirs from all the games. He unfolds the story directly from his memoirs, not allowing future events to color the moment-to-moment narration. He writes in an exciting style, using the "present time" of each game--not from a past tense perspective. This involves the reader in a "You are there" experience, giving him the feeling that he is witnessing each game as it occurs.
The 1958 season was a drama in extremes. The team had high expectations, especially after just missing going to the NFL title game in 1957. The team was stocked with five future Hall of Famers: Y.A. Tittle, Joe Perry, Hugh McElhenny, Bob St. Clair, and Leo Nomellini. As the author describes it, "They had an offense good enough to win and a defense just good enough to lose."

During the season, the 49ers suffered their worst defeat ever at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams.  Their owner, Vic Morabito,  labeled them "the worst 49er team ever" after a lopsided loss to the Bears. The season was marred by the big brawl with the Packers (when five players were ejected), by a quarterback controversy between Y.A. Tittle and John Brodie that lasted throughout the season, and by a season's tragic end when their legendary Head Coach, Frankie Albert, abruptly quit.
Miraculously, the 49ers rebounded to earn respect by defeating the Eagles, Lions, Packers, and staging their most decisive victory against the World Champion Baltimore Colts, winners of the first overtime NFL Championship game. They amassed impressive record-breakers like Joe Perry's biggest rushing day of 174 yards against Detroit-- shattering Steve Van Buren's all-time rushing record for career rushing yards, and McElhenny's biggest day of 159 yards rushing against the powerful Packers' team.
But those 49er wins and losses paint only part of the picture in Jacobs' book. There was grand old Kezar Stadium, a mad house populated by 49er "fanatics," a place where the cold bite of the Pacific Ocean fog would cut right through your blood stream and chill your bones. It was the birthplace of the famed Y.A. Tittle to R.C.Owens' "Alley-Oop" pass-plays and the epic site of the last quarter "cliffhangers" to beat the Steelers, Eagles and Lions with an array of all-star rookies: Abe Woodson, Jimmy Pace, Charlie Kruger, Fred Dugan and Jerry Mertens.
The book sparks with action and dejavu posters of the season that fans of the era will recall. The sepia brown photos throughout add to the nostalgic quality of the period about which the book is written from the perspective of an avid eyewitness. The reader will not be able to put down this stirring account of this less publicized season in the grand tradition of the San Francisco 49ers.

The Bay Bridge (Images of America) Review

The Bay Bridge (Images of America)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book provides an historically detailed and accurate summary of the photographic record of the building of the San Francisco- Oakland bridge. The authors made great efforts to acccurately document and describe the contents of each reproduced photograph, and are careful in defining sources.
Unfortunately, there is no comparable text which describes how the project came into being, how it was designed, how construction was managed, and the results after completion. A few captions in the book provide a tantalizing glimpse of the failure of mass transit after the bridge opened; and caption references give an introduction to a few sources that may be able to provide more information.
I'm left with the feeling that this story is a key element in the history of the development of mass transit in the United States in the last 60 years; hopefully, someone will have more to say about this.
Four stars for the photographic record (would like to see more of the results of the bridge's operation), one star for the history.

With sheltered harbors, open prairies, and secluded woodlands, San Juan Island has been a magnet for human habitation for thousands of years. Salmon runs and rich soil promised not only an abundant food source but also a good living for those willing to work hard. But it was not until the islands became the focus of an international boundary dispute between Great Britain and the United States in the late 1850s that San Juan Island drew the attention of Europeans and Americans. These newcomers watched how Coast Salish and Northwest Coast peoples harvested natural resources and adapted their techniques. Settlers and Indians sometimes intermarried, and many of their descendants remain to this day. San Juan Islanders of all generations have worked hard to preserve their home, thus maintaining a sense of place that is as evident today as it was when the first canoes came ashore.
