Christy Mathewson turned in the greatest pitching performance in World Series history in 1905 for the New York Giants when he pitched three shutouts in six days against the Philadelphia Athletics. Winning three games in the World Series has only been done twelve more times. Randy Johnson did it in 2001, but before than you have to go back to Mickey Lolich in 1968 and Bob Gibson in 1967. But none of them pitched three shutouts. Jack Coombs also won three of the five games in the 1910 World Series, but without pitching three shutouts. Lew Burdette is fondly remembered in Milwaukee for winning three games in the 1957 World Series, but no three shutouts. When you consider that Johnson won game 7 of the 2001 World Series in relief and that no starting pitcher has yet to get three starts in the Fall Classic this century, it might be a long time before a pitcher wins three games. Mathewson also struck out 18 batters, which is still the record for Ks in a five game series and a lot more likely to fall that the three shutout record.
Known as "the Christian Gentleman," Mathewson served as a Captain in World War II in a until commanded by Branch Rickey that included Lieutenant George Sisler and Captain Ty Cobb. During a drill in 1918, Mathewson was exposed to poison gas that seared his lungs and would cause his death seven years later from tuberculosis. Mathewson was a posthumous member of the original Baseball Hall of Fame class of 1936 along with Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner and Walter Johnson. Every time I list who I think are the five greatest pitchers of all-time I start with Mathewson, Johnson and Sandy Koufax. The other two are always in flux (I have been doing Satchel Paige and Lefty Grove for the past year, but now I am thinking Roger Clemens needs to be considered). At Cooperstown, Matty's plaque reads:
CHRISTY MATHEWSON

"MATTY WAS MASTER OF THEM ALL"
This framed 8 x 10 photograph shows Mathewson posing at the top of his delivery in his New York Giants uniform. Matheson won 373 games over 17 season, primarily for the New York Giants by using his famous fade-away pitch, which he described as "an exceptionally blow ball calculated to deceived the greatest batter." College educated, Mathewson took a scientific approach to pitching: his fastball could be thrown so that it had an inward, outward, or upward shoot. He also threw a slow ball, a drop curve, an outcurve, a rise ball, and spitball, and, of course, the fade-away (which he called the fall-away, but the press had a better idea). Grantland Rice wrote: "He was the only man I ever met who in spirit and inspiration was greater than his game."
