Jim Goldberg, Raised by Wolves Review

Jim Goldberg, Raised by Wolves
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Goldberg documented street kids of San Francisco and Hollywood over the course of ten years. His work reflects the effort and emotion of that period. Unlike previous attempts to document homeless youth, Goldberg never sensationalized or objectified the kids he worked with. The text maintains individual voices, never judging, never interpreting, simply transmitting narratives that mainstream society would otherwise never hear. His photography radiates relationships of trust: he allows kids to illustrate their issues and amplify their voices, sharing their stories, artwork, and writings, without ever speaking for them. Such justice is rarely provided to an oppressed population. "Raised by Wolves" incites the reader's tears, anguish, and outrage - but also joy, that someone was able to successfully provide a platform for such truths to be heard. Goldberg more than did his part in attempting to educate America. The greater issue is, will we listen?

The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite Review

The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite

We visited Yosemite in July and took this book along. It provided tons of useful information about where and when to get great shots, and directions to each spot. It was very useful, and at the price is also a real bargain.
While there, I did a Photo Walking Tour with a pro photographer who works in Yosemite, arranged through the Ansel Adams Gallery. To my surprise, during our hike she pulled a well-worn copy of *this* book out of her backpack and cited it as a good reference for shooting photos in Yosemite -- so that would be another helpful endorsement for it.

San Francisco's Castro (CA) (Images of America) Review

San Francisco's Castro (CA) (Images of America)

Along the lines of the other books about different cities, this book hits the early gay days of the Castro. A little heavy on Milk, but otherwise a decent book.

Nestled in the Eureka Valley area, the Castro is arguably the most well-known of San Francisco's neighborhoods, having been the epicenter of the gay rights movement since the 1970s. This new collection of photographs shows the areaís growth from a smattering of Victorian houses built for working-class families in the 1870s to the flood of young gay men who settled in the neighborhood during the 1970s. This influx transformed the area and led to the rise of Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person elected to a major public office. This book also chronicles the 1978 assassination of Milk and Mayor George Moscone, the subsequent riots, and the effects of AIDS on the community in the 1980s and 1990s. Ultimately, these stirring images bear witness to the resilience of the Castro today.

I travel a few times a year to the Bay Area and I love to take pictures, but I'm hardly a professional. As an amatuer, I really enjoyed this book as a guide to lead me to certain places to get the shots that will impress my friends! The Photographer's Guide to San Francisco is a great guide for all photographers!

Photographing San Francisco Digital Field Guide Review

Photographing San Francisco Digital Field Guide
Average Reviews:

I consider myself an amateur photographer and in my free time enjoy taking pictures of people, landscapes, and cats. A friend of mine gifted me Bruce Sawle's "Photographing San Francisco: Digital Field Guide" and I love it. This book takes the guess work out of where to get the best shot of famous landmarks, and for those who like to experiment more with their camera lens, it details in plain language which type to use for that postcard quality photo. The book even has maps to locate the cities famous attractions, if you're not from the area. "Photographing San Francisco: Digital Field Guide" has something for both the amateur and professional photographer. I enjoyed reading it and use it, and recommend it for the shutterbug in your life.
