This beautifully organized book provides an easy-to-follow guide for establishing butterfly, bird, and insect habitats in your own garden. Host plants, nectar plants, and food sources (both native and non-native) including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and vines are listed for both butterflies and birds. Maintenance of the habitat garden is detailed with specific suggestions. Additional sections explain the importance of encouraging beneficial insects, the beauty and role of ponds in the garden, and special advice on "how to" start your own habitat garden. Color photographs provide a visual guide while spot illustrations and quotations provide inspiration and encouragement. A "must" for any Bay Area gardener.

A must for nursery-hopping gardeners in the San Francisco Bay Area. Extensive listings of a diverse slew of nurseries (and related businesses), garden clubs, classes and other resources is well- (and amusingly-) written. Sidebars throughout the book hold forth on various gardening issues: natives versus lawns, why to use botanical names, the egregious chopping that passes for pruning done by street tree crews, and so forth. Well worth the paltry asking price.

Golden Gate Gardening: Year-Round Food Gardening in the San Francisco Bay Area and Coastal California Review

So this past spring I decided, once and for all, that I wanted to start a garden. I had no experience in this subject, and I searched for a good book at the library. I found this book. I ended up renewing it five times, and finally ordering it from Amazon.com. It has truly been a life saver. What I like best is the way the book is laid out, with sections on vegetables, fruits, and flowers, as well as special sections on pests and other problems. The book is well organized and the index points the reader in the right directions, making it easy to find what I'm looking for down to the tiniest detail. The charts make it clear which San Francisco Bay Area microclimates are suitable for which plants, and the book explains down to the tiniest detail how to start plants, transplant them, grow them, and harvest them. At the same time that this book is informative beyond all my original expections, is also excels in not being condescending (one of my pet peeves). I believe it is the perfect book for the seasoned gardener just moving into the area, the seasoned gardener in need of more detailed information, and someone like me, with no gardening experience whatsoever.

Plants and Landscapes for Summer-Dry Climates of the San Francisco Bay Region Review

Plants and Landscapes for Summer-Dry Climates of the San Francisco Bay Region

It's about time somebody published an inspiring photo driven book about western gardens. The Sunset Western Garden Book may be the bible for western gardeners for its wealth of information but it does not serve to inspire the way a book full of real gardens can. With more than 500 photos of western gardens this book should be destined to be a classic.
The great thing is that it is not just a beautifully designed, coffee table type book. The text is authoritative with dozens of full page charts and it seems to have been reviewed by a who's who of garden experts. The author suggests plants from all over the world that are adapted to a summer-dry, Mediterranean climate and the photographer shows them in gardens not just close-up details.
Hooray for this book. We western gardeners are too often frustrated by books and gardening advice originating from other regions. This book is so beautiful it will frustrate gardeners in those other regions who will want what we now have.

Gardening. Environmental Studies. This generously illustrated book features more than 650 native Californian and Mediterranean plants suited to the climate and microclimates of the Bay Area. More than 550 color photographs show plants in garden settings that blend well with natural surroundings and reduce reliance on water and other limited resources. "This book is a valuable resource for climate-compatible gardening in the Bay Area. It will occupy a prominent place in my library for many years to come" -- Katherine Greenberg, President, Mediterranean Garden Society. "A truly fine book. It's hard to imagine how anyone would want a stuffy old English garden after seeing the beautiful gardens featured here" -- Katherine Grace Endicott, columnist, San Francisco Chronicle, and author, Northern California Gardening.

This book tells me almost everything I need to know to start my first vegetable garden, from planning my garden to dealing with pests. I can't imagine a better all-around book for gardeners who live in the Bay Area or California coast. The information is all specific to local micro-climates, with no space wasted on information that is not relevant in this part of the country. My only criticism is that I would have left out the handful of recipes scattered in the book.
