If you somehow found your way to this review, I'm somewhat amazed. Amazon has this audio/DVD lecture series under "paperbacks," for who knows what reason. I own this series of lectures on audio alone, as well as roughly a dozen other courses taught by the masterful professor Robert Greenberg. Of all his courses, this is the most meaty, the most in depth. The course covers 32 lectures spanning the nine symphonies. The structure of each symphony is carefully explored, illuminating sidenotes on Beethoven's life are mentioned to enhance our understanding of the music, and notes on the music (which Greenberg calls wordscores) are given, as well.
These classes require close listening. They are not light nor trivial. They are equivalent to the lessons a music composition major might get at a university in studying Beethoven's work (minus the bluebook essay exams). You do not need to know how to read music at all, but a healthy curiousity and devotion to improving your understanding of music is very helpful. After completing this course, your appreciation for the profundity of Beethoven's achievement will be greatly enhanced.
If you like this course or are curious regarding Dr. Greenberg's other lecture series, please see the Teaching Company website.
