This is a penetrating collection of K's talks from Oct. '81 to Sept. of '82 given in India, England, Switzerland, and the U.S. If you have read a lot of his books, I am in agreement with "Bigfoot" - there may not be anything "new" in regards to intellectuality; however, just by reading this I stumbled across "new" things simply because of a particular word in a particular sentence. K's work can be an intellectual activity, or it can be a total experience in which he is not a "guru" or "teacher", but rather your mirror. Every time I go back to a book I've read, I notice "new" things pop up in front of me. Maybe because my brain is changing? I don't know, but my life is. So if you have an opportunity to read this short (112 pgs.) book, I'd recommend you take it up - especially since it is talks from his later life.

Praise for NONPROFIT SUSTAINABILITY
"This is much more than a financial how-to book. It's a nonprofit's guide to empowerment. It demystifies mission impact and financial viability using The Matrix Map to provide strategic options for any organization. A must-read for every nonprofit CEO, CFO, and board member."—Julia A. McClendon, chief executive officer, YWCA Elgin, Illinois
"This book should stay within easy reaching distance and end up completely dog-eared because it walks the reader through a practical but sometimes revelatory process of choosing the right mix of programs for mission impact and financial sustainability. Its use is a practice in which every nonprofit should engage its board once a year."—Ruth McCambridge, editor in chief, The Nonprofit Quarterly
"Up until a few years ago, funding and managing a nonprofit was a bit like undertaking an ocean voyage. Now, it's akin to windsurfing—you must be nimble, prepared to maximize even the slightest breeze, and open to modifying your course at a moment's notice. Innovative executive directors or bold board members who want their organization to be able to ride the big waves of the new American economy must read this book."—Robert L. E. Egger, president, DC Central Kitchen/Campus Kitchens Project/V3 Campaign
"Most nonprofits struggle to find a long-term sustainable business model that will enable them to deliver impact on their mission. Thanks to Jeanne Bell, Jan Masaoka, and Steve Zimmerman help is now in sight. This book offers practical, concrete steps you can take to develop your own unique path to sustainability without compromising your mission."—Heather McLeod Grant, consultant, Monitor Institute, and author, Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High-Impact Nonprofits
"At last! An urgently needed framework to prepare leaders to meet head-on the persistent twin challenges of impact and sustainability. This is a practical tool based on good business principles that can bring boards and staff members together to lead their organizations to sustainable futures."—Nora Silver, adjunct professor and director, Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership, Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley
"Together, Jeanne Bell, Jan Masaoka, and Steve Zimmerman equal wisdom, experience, and know-how on sustainability and lots of other things. Buy, read, and learn from this terrific book!"—Clara Miller, president and CEO, Nonprofit Finance Fund

Fortune Is a Woman Review

Fortune Is a Woman
Average Reviews:

When it comes to multi-generational novels featuring strong women protagonists, Elizabeth Adler excels. In this particular novel, she also exposes the reader to a different culture and language as the story moves between Hong Kong and San Francisco's China Town as well as Nob Hill.
Francesca Harrison is the abused daughter of a wealthy San Francisco banker and Annie Aysgarth is an English woman searching for her runaway brother. They meet in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 1906 that rocked San Francisco. They are befriended by Lai Tsin, another earthquake victim, and the three form a lifelong friendship that takes them into the 1960's by way of overwhelming tragedies and glamorous triumphs.
This book revolves around strong women who refuse to be destroyed by what fate deals them but create their own fortune, both personal and financial, in a riveting rags-to-riches tale told as only Elizabeth Adler can.
Well-drawn secondary characters, plot twists aplenty, and an amazing ending that will totally shock you combine to make this a must-read novel for fans of women's fiction.

For years I followed Rose Dosti's Culinary SOS article in the LA Times. I however, lived in Tacoma. We moved to southern California four years ago and I internet searched all her archived articles available from the LA Times. I found all her books on Amazon and just had to have them. If I had a way to meet this woman I would have, but as I understand, she sadly passed away. She wrote this as a diet book in some ways, but as we all know, we really shouldn't diet, but just eat healthier. This is the perfect book for that.

I Am Grateful: Recipes and Lifestyle of Cafe Gratitude Review

I Am Grateful: Recipes and Lifestyle of Cafe Gratitude
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the hardest things for me to adjust to when paring down my intake of food is the adjustment of making any kind of elaborate gourmet style meal if I need to, to making something out of almost no ingredients and not even be able to COOK IT!
When I switched to primarily raw foods, my family was on the verge of Mutiny. I tried RAW IN TEN MINUTES which at first was okay, but I have a good imagination. All of the recipes started to taste the same and my family went from eating everything on their plates to making excuses to avoid dinner and eat in their rooms (stashed organic corn chips etc).
When I saw I AM GRATEFUL, I figured it might be another blonger of a book, but I decided to try it anyway. It was someone's birthday the week I got it, so I decided to make a raw dessert (strawberry shortcake) and then a baked cake for everyone else.
I never made it to the cake. Everyone went berserk over the raw strawberry shortcake.
I have made about 1/2 of the recipes in this book so far and I can say OMG it is truly FANTASTIC. Our favorites are: Marinated Veggies, Falafels, Fiery Carrot Avocado Soup, Coconut Curry Soup (Thai), Thai green papaya salad , Coconut Lime Dressing, Jalapeno mint chutney, Smokey Mole (OMG that is the BEST RECIPE EVER), Marinara with Brazil nut Parmesan cheese, Pad Thai, pecan porridge, Cinnamon Rolls, Strawberry Shortcake (with raspberries is DIVINE), German Chocolate Cake, Strawberry Apple Cobbler, and Lemon Meringue Pie.
We don't eat desserts that often, or we would have ripped through the entire dessert section.
Preparation is about that of any meal- it is not too involved on some recipes- but others, take overnight food dryer time and have to be planned accordingly. However, I find that it works out fine in some cases to do an overnight. I am really in love with the recipes in this book. They taste AMAZING and Gourmet in quality, yet they have simple ingredients in some cases. I substitute ingredients I don't have until I can get what I need quite often.
I can not recommend this book highly enough. It is like Moosewood used to be to vegetarians years ago........

Acid Dreams: The Complete Social History of LSD: The CIA, the Sixties, and Beyond
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is surprisingly one of the best books I have read. The authors give a colorfully accurate account of the events that occured decades ago, all of which still echo into our current era. It covers the origin of LSD, as a drug the CIA funded research on for use as a tool for mind control applications using civilians and military personnel as test subjects. At the very outset, it was obvious that the CIA was well aware of the potential power of this substance in its ability to wreak havoc on the collective psyche, to shatter current assumptions and threaten cherished ego boundaries. Yet, eventually it became available to the masses who would come to extol it's use religiously and otherwise.....giving rise to the groundswell of counterculture in the 60's. This book, more than any other source I have encountered, explores the underlying causes of the demise of the cultural/political/self re-evolution of that time and gives us pause to reflect on the politics of consciousness - to see who really won The War Of The Mind. Proof again that truth is stranger than fiction. Be informed.........read this book.

Acid Dreams is the complete social history of LSD and the counterculture it helped to define in the sixties. Martin Lee and Bruce Shlain's exhaustively researched and astonishing account-part of it gleaned from secret government files-tells how the CIA became obsessed with LSD as an espionage weapon during the early l950s and launched a massive covert research program, in which countless unwitting citizens were used as guinea pigs. Though the CIA was intent on keeping the drug to itself, it ultimately couldn't prevent it from spreading into the popular culture; here LSD had a profound impact and helped spawn a political and social upheaval that changed the face of America. From the clandestine operations of the government to the escapades of Timothy Leary, Abbie Hoffman, Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters, Allen Ginsberg, and many others, Acid Dreams provides an important and entertaining account that goes to the heart of a turbulent period in our history. "Engaging throughout . . . at once entertaining and disturbing." - Andrew Weil, M.D., The Nation; "Marvelously detailed . . . loaded with startling revelations." - Los Angeles Daily News; "An engrossing account of a period . . . when a tiny psychoactive molecule affected almost every aspect of Western life." - William S. Burroughs; "An important historical synthesis of the spread and effects of a drug that served as a central metaphor for an era." - John Sayles.

John D'emilio's book clearly make the point about the minority status of the homosexual in America. The start of the first organizations to promote a homosexual presents, with their naive belief that they would be excepted, to the more militant efforts in the early sixties. D'emilio has documented carefully the many events of importants that led up the the stonewall riot. Making it clear that the fight didn't begin at stonewall, but many years before. He talks in detail about the different organizations that started, and how they developed and changed as the struggle continued. D'emilio did his homework on this one without question. If you were ever curious about the events that started the gay revolution this is a must read.

With thorough documentation of the oppression of homosexuals and biographical sketches of the lesbian and gay heroes who helped the contemporary gay culture to emerge, Sexual Politics, Sexual Communities supplies the definitive analysis of the homophile movement in the U.S. from 1940 to 1970. John D'Emilio's new preface and afterword examine the conditions that shaped the book and the growth of gay and lesbian historical literature."How many students of American political culture know that during the McCarthy era more people lost their jobs for being alleged homosexuals than for being Communists? . . . While I am pleased to see a postive book on hippies and psychedelics, this book is an obvious attempt to cash in on the 30th anniversity of the summer of love, 1967. While giving a general overview of the impact of psychedelic drugs in the sixties, it mainly focuses on the year 1967 and the cities of London and San Francisco. It tells the same old story we've read a million times of the wonders of Haight-Ashbury and the events around the summer of 1967. New York and LA are given passing mentions, while the rest of the country and most of the world are totally ignored. There are alot of nice pictures, but there is also too much filler, i.e., 2 page spreads of crowds, people hanging out, etc. The usual cast of characters are here: Leary, Keasey, the SF bands, the Beatles, the Stones, etc. Being an american, the most interesting part to me was the articles about some of the british sceen makers, such as Peter Jenner, Indica Bookstore and the International Times. The real revelation was the poster work of Hapshash and the Coloured Court, a pair of London artists which certainly equaled if not outshown the San Francisco poster artists of the time. Too bad not more of their work was shown and less of crowd scenes. Overall, the book had alot of interesting trivia and pictures, but it generally lacked depth and had too much filler. Published by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the book is an obvious attempt to promote the major bands that came out of a certain scene, rather than an indepth study of the scene itself.

There are many books today about ritual abuse. Some of them are wrtten by armchair sceptics, who, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, dismiss the whole subject as a "modern myth". Others are written by professionals who believe in the existence of ritual abuse but indeed write from a very distanced and academic point of view. This kind of books can of course be quite useful for researchers. But I think that the best boks about ritual abuse is written by survivors. This is one of these books. It is well written and pedagogic. I think it is a great recource for survivors, and to those who want to support them.

First-Time Landlord: Your Guide to Renting out a Single-Family Home (USA Today/Nolo Series) Review

First-Time Landlord: Your Guide to Renting out a Single-Family Home (USA Today/Nolo Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've reviewed three Nolo books now and all three have done a wonderful job of translating complicated legal mumbo-jumbo into readable material regular folks can understand. They may not replace the advice of a lawyer in my opinion, but perhaps I'm just a wimp. I was a little apprehensive of a book publisher of this caliber teaming up with USA Today as I consider their newspaper the sort of thing people read when they don't want to learn anything. Still, in a strange way, the combination works rather well. Nolo provides the information and the pages are sprinkled with interesting factoids or Snapshot Pictures to keep the material from getting too dry and putting you to sleep. It makes the entire book reader-friendly while still providing a valuable source of info.
Here are the different chapters:
1. Is Owning Rental Property for You?
2. Landlording with Family or Friends
3. Preparing and Marketing Your Rental Property
4. Screening and Choosing Good Tenants
5. Preparing a Lease and Getting the Tenant Moved In
6. Manage Your Rental Income to Maximize Tax Deductions
7. Keeping Things Shipshape: Repairs and Maintenance
8. Landlord Liability for Injuries, Crimes, and More
9. Dealing with Difficult Tenants
10. Hiring a Property Manager
11. Exiting the Rental Property Business
Each chapter has subchapters with specific topics that are easily referenced via the table of contents if you are searching for something specific.
Like other Nolo books, First-Time Landlord provides a step-by-step guide to the process of purchasing an investment property from start to finish. UNLIKE other Nolo books, First-Time Landlord does not provide a reference guide containing the various laws in the 50 different states that will impact you. Instead, you will frequently get phrases like, "check state law", that tend to get annoying. Even worse, they often don't provide suggestions as to which state department or authority we should talk to. Those blue pages in the phone book get larger every year and it's difficult to play the runaround game with state workers when we don't know where to begin. It's a significant omission and I hope it's updated in future editions, but it's my only gripe. Otherwise, any potential landlord will want to read this book first and I'm still giving them five stars for the info and layout. Nice job, Nolo.

How College Affects Students: A Third Decade of Research (Jossey-Bass Higher & Adult Education) Review

How College Affects Students: A Third Decade of Research (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a review and synthesis of literally thousands of studies on how students grow and develop during college. The authors have a gift for integrating multiple findings (even those that conflict with each other) and boiling it down to just the main conclusions and ideas.
That being said, they are summarizing a LOT of information. This is not the type of book that most people would read cover-to-cover in a few sittings. I have used it as a reference, reading the summaries near the back of the book, skimming sections, and then carefully reading only the chapters that pertain most closely to my interests.
The book is quite accessible to readers, but the readability does have a downside. Researchers may be frustrated by the lack of detail and statistical data regarding most of the studies. As thick as this book is, it is a compilation of summaries. However, the comprehensive bilbliography makes it very easy to locate all of the original sources, quickly identifying all major studies on nearly any topic within student development.
Overall, this is a comprehensive overview of a decade of journals, books, and presentations, all packed into one long but reader-friendly volume. Those looking for a brief or applied guide to practice may be frustrated or overwhelmed by the scope, but this book should be required reading for anyone who is at all interested in research on student development.

On Learning and Knowledge Review

On Learning and Knowledge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this collection of talks and notes from his diaries Krishnamurti identifies and explores the distinction between learning and knowledge. Knowledge is past and accumulated knowledge, he says, tends to enslave you to accepted norms and ways of thinking. Learning is always in the future, it's a continually moving process where the moment you learn something it becomes knowledge and knowledge, though necessary to live in this world, belongs to the past and is a burden. Learning is not listening with one's knowledge. The point is driven home when he says that what most "learned people" really know is merely a collection of facts and since we are just following we are "second hand, worthless human beings". His suggestion is to observe the whole movement of the learning process and arrive at ones own conclusion without rushing.
Nice book, but at times I found it a bit difficult to understand what he is getting at.

Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What a nice book. I live in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles, and a friend suggested this book to me. I realized I had read a novel by the author a few years ago that I really enjoyed, "The Ivory Coast" a jazz/noir set in Vegas, so I picked up a copy. Now I'm planning to take the walks written about in the book. Wow. As a kid, one of my favorite "Three Stooges" was shot on a stair street. They had a job delivering ice, and Curly has a huge block of ice in tongs, and when he gets to the top, he's holding a little ice cube. What I love about L. A. is how much history and mystery exists here, particularly on the east side, and parts of Hollywood. Because it was run down over here for so long, large swaths of the east side weren't touched when all of the money moved in a little west, and few of those monstrous developments occurred; there are still little nuggets and gems you can find. My only quibble is that I would have loved pictures of the stair street, but on the other hand, the descriptions are great, and leaving the mystery makes me want to go there myself. Which I plan to.

In a city known for its fast cars and freeways, this guide reveals a unique feature of the Los Angeles cityscape: more than 200 stairways across the hilly sections of the city, many of which are remnants from the days when most city residents depended on streetcars and buses for transportation. Containing more than 40 walks and detailed maps, this handbook highlights the charms and quirks of this quintessential feature of Los Angeles' development and chronicles the geographical, architectural, and historical features of each staircase and the neighborhoods in which the steps are located. Rated for duration and difficulty, the circular walks deliver tales of historic homes, their fascinating inhabitants, and troves of historic trivia-such as where William Faulkner lived while he wrote the screenplay for To Have and Have Not, where Graham Nash lived, and where actress Thelma Todd was murdered-while other walks highlight spectacular homes by some of southern California's most important architects, including Neutra and Schindler. From strolling through the classic La Loma neighborhood in Pasadena and walking the vintage Red Car Loop in Silver Lake to taking the Beachwood Canyon Hollywoodland hike and enjoying the magnificent ocean views from the Castellammare district in Pacific Palisades, these staircases present a new way for urban explorers to discover a little-known side of the City of Angels.
