Here Comes the Guide: Northern California: Wedding Locations and Services (Here Comes the Guide Northern California) Review

Here Comes the Guide: Northern California: Wedding Locations and Services (Here Comes the Guide Northern California)

I just pinned down a wedding venue, and I found this book helpful, with a few caveats. Firstly, brides-to-be should know that every venue in the book must pay "Here Comes the Guide" to be included. This engenders a lack of objectivity for the writers judging these locations. I am a travel writer myself so I felt a litle cheated by not having access to a trustworthy critical eye in the site reviews. Secondly, I was frustrated with the lack of photographs and felt the "Here Comes the Guide" website was much more helpful in this regard. All the locations in the book are online, and it's free there.
I actually found a gorgeous venue in Mendocino that wasn't included in the book or website. Just remember while "Here Comes the Guide" is a good place to start, you can find rare gems and less-travelled venues that aren't in the book. Talk to friends and experts who have gone to a lot of weddings. Another good place to look is the Chamber of Commerce website of the city in which you're planning to get married.

Where to Get Married: San Francisco Bay Area: A Photographic Guide to the 100 Best Sites

My fiancee and I have purchased and used many different books that have places to get married in the bay area. The thing that this book had over all the others is that a picture is worth a 1000 words. You can look at the picture, and instantly determine if it is the right decor for your wedding. This book provides a great description of the place in flowery grandiose language, but lacks on the details needed to choose the site. That would be fine, because you can always call the provided phone number to get that info, right? Not in this case. Of the ten places I decided to call this morning, only one phone number was correct! So, now I have to hunt for the phone numbers, which will be difficult for the places like the Rose Garden in Golden Gate Park, do I call the City's Parks and Recreation?

Broke-Ass Stuart's Guide to Living Cheaply in San Francisco Review

Broke-Ass Stuart's Guide to Living Cheaply in San Francisco
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first travel book I have ever sat down and read cover to cover for my own enjoyment. Broke-ass Stuart is not a travel guide, it is a voice. Don't get me wrong, the book is informative; however, what sets it apart is Stuart himself, a street-wise hipster who perfectly balances going with the flow and traditional San Francisco irreverence. Finally, Stuart gives it to you straight. If a place is cheap and bad he'll say it. If a place is expensive, he'll tell you to bring a friend and split it. Stuart represents a growing population who just wants to go out, have a great time and pay rent at the end of the month.

The Unofficial Guide to San Francisco (Unofficial Guides) Review

The Unofficial Guide to San Francisco (Unofficial Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've bought several of the Unofficial Guides and they are my first choice in travel books. The rating system for hotels, restaurants, and attractions makes it very easy to compare one to the other and choose whatever is appropriate for your needs. More importantly, they are upfront about what to avoid. We all know about the "best" things to see and do from the other travel guides. The Unofficial Guides let you know what's a waste of time and/or money, as well as giving you tips on how to get the best out of the "best". I buy the Unofficial Guides to get the nitty gritty on areas of town to avoid due to high crime, lack of public transportation, etc. This helps me pick a hotel in a decent area and time my sightseeing trips accordingly. Very straight forward and easy to read. I hope the authors someday write Unofficial Guides to European cities as well!!
