Bread and Chocolate: My Food Life In and Around San Francisco Review

I really love this wonderful, and inspiring book by Fran Gage, who used to own a bakery in my neighborhood. Not just a collection of stories, but interspersed with the prose are recipes culled from her experiences and travels. To me, this is what a cookbook should really be. It's a lovely book--well worth owning.

Too many collections of recipes from professional chefs prove disappointing in the home kitchen. In dramatic -- and delicious -- contrast, the five recipes I've tried so far from this book have all been major successes. The coq au vin recipe alone is worth the price of the book. Although I own hundreds of cookbooks, I return to a few favorites most of the time. This terrific new book has earned a place on my "favorites" shelf.

The Woman Who Ate CHINATOWN: A San Francisco Odyssey Review

The Woman Who Ate CHINATOWN: A San Francisco Odyssey

Oh my gosh... this is such a great little book to introduce to one's east coast family members; especially for the sisters who love to learn more about their brothers's passion for the culture, the history and the food of San Francisco's Chinatown. I saw Shirley on a KRON4 episode and fell in love with her. And being a "tigerman" who loves exploring Chinatown AND China, I went on my own odyssey of eating & seeing my way through San Francisco's famed landmarks! I sincerely recommend this book and Shirley's tours to the novice and novice-hearted. It's a great way to learn about the culture by "eating one's way" through it! And the book is also a priceless addition to anyone's library. ENJOY!!! ~BMH

For two decades Shirley Fong-Torres has guided 20,000 visitors a year through San Francisco's Chinatown. This book shows why so many keep coming back for more. Whether you are a tourist who wants to eat like the locals or a Bay Area native, this book has the most compact yet comprehensive list of ideas for delicious dining in a unique, humorous and easy-to-read format.
As a long time Bay Area resident, I found myself using it immediately

Things I love about the book
-It's lightweight, so I can carry it my purse
-There are tips about places I frequent that I didn't know about
-Great cross indexing. It's very easy to use.
-It doesn't have the same tired general knowledge tips
-Really amazing that not only is SF and immediate areas covered, but that the entire Bay Area is nicely represented.
It also captures the essence of Chowhound of having fun while finding something wonderful to eat.
I've traveled quite a bit and bought many guide books. This is one of the best and most useful books I own.

Insight Pocket Guide San Francisco (Insight Guides) Review

Insight Pocket Guide San Francisco (Insight Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are many books written in the travel literature genre pertaining to San Francisco, but few cover as much territory as Insight Guide San Francisco.
Just by glancing through the table of contents, you notice that what is important to the editors was not where to eat or stay, although this is briefly dealt with at the end of the guide, but rather, mixing history, culture, people, historic places, and neighborhoods that seduce visitors to this "City by the Bay," as many call it.

The focus of this guidebook is to enable visitors to partake in a total tourist experience. Commencing with the opening chapters, readers are presented with a chronology of the history of this great city beginning with pre-1500s and up to the twenty-first century. We learn about native tribes, the Gold Rush, the 1906 earthquake, Alcatraz Island, where some of the most notorious criminals were incarcerated, the servicemen who took up residence in the city after World War II, Asian immigration, the 1950s when the city was the birthplace of a new cultural renaissance or the "beatniks."
We are also reminded that to fully experience San Francisco, it is essential to appreciate the huge mosaic of cultural groups that make up its diverse population. Consequently, snippets are provided concerning its population that, according to the last census, is made up of 46 percent white, 29 percent Asian, 14 percent Hispanic, 11 percent African-American. Moreover,we learn about the immense contributions of African-Americans, Chinese and Chinatown that is the biggest Chinese community outside Asia itself, Japanese, Filipinos, Koreans, Vietnamese, Mexicans, Italians, and the Gay community, who all bring with them something unique.
When my wife and I first visited San Francisco many years ago, we were reminded that it is a walking city. The guide book definitely reconfirms this as it states, "it's the many and varied hills more than anything else that offer San Francisco's visitors such a variety of vistas." Although the city may only be a few miles wide and long, it is made up of at least a dozen unique neighborhoods. These are mapped out with their sights, activities and experiences, with the qualification that not all of what is available in San Francisco is covered, nonetheless what is presented reflects a combination of the city's popular and out of the way offerings.
You have an excellent grasp of Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower, Chinatown, Union Square, the Financial District, Civic Center, Soma, Nob Hill, Haight-Ashbury, Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge and some of the not-so-familiar venues.
As is the case with all of the Insight Guide books, the photo images are spectacular and breathtaking as they capture the pulse of this great city.
To repeat the old cliché, a picture is worth a thousand words, this just about sums up how effective are the many photos scattered throughout the book. This is particularly true of the photos of the different cultural groups that make San Francisco as to what it is- a most unique ambiance that will entrance you with its sights and sounds, and even its fog, that some consider romantic.
By the end of the book, you have an excellent grasp and well-rounded picture of what makes San Francisco tick.
Norm Goldman, Editor Bookpleasures

Patricia Unterman's San Francisco Food Lover's Pocket Guide Review

Patricia Unterman's San Francisco Food Lover's Pocket Guide
Average Reviews:

I recently moved within the city limits of San Francisco earlier this year and started soliciting local restaurant recommendations from friends. After trying some places, I soon realized that my tastes and preferences didn't always sync up with my friends, so my collection of restaurant recommendations was not very authoritative. With Patricia Unterman's newly updated 3rd edition of her Food Lover's Guide, I now possess an entire book chock full of authoritative restaurant recommendations. The handful of restaurants I've tried so far based on her book have been fantastic. I even learned where to buy high quality meats and fresh fish in my neighborhood! Only because the author self-admittedly does not fully appreciate craft beers and great BBQ food, the book is just shy of being PERFECT, in my opinion. Get this book and learn about ales and ribs elsewhere.

The Unofficial Guide to San Francisco (Unofficial Guides) Review

The Unofficial Guide to San Francisco (Unofficial Guides)
Average Reviews:

I've bought several of the Unofficial Guides and they are my first choice in travel books. The rating system for hotels, restaurants, and attractions makes it very easy to compare one to the other and choose whatever is appropriate for your needs. More importantly, they are upfront about what to avoid. We all know about the "best" things to see and do from the other travel guides. The Unofficial Guides let you know what's a waste of time and/or money, as well as giving you tips on how to get the best out of the "best". I buy the Unofficial Guides to get the nitty gritty on areas of town to avoid due to high crime, lack of public transportation, etc. This helps me pick a hotel in a decent area and time my sightseeing trips accordingly. Very straight forward and easy to read. I hope the authors someday write Unofficial Guides to European cities as well!!

Bohemian San Francisco, Its Restaurants And Their Most Famous Recipes; The Elegant Art Of Dining Review

Bohemian San Francisco, Its Restaurants And Their Most Famous Recipes; The Elegant Art Of Dining
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very fun and interesting book that combines local history, food history, restaurant history with tons of recipes. From 1914.
Also at gutenberg and manybooks.
Recipes are simple, whole foods kind: Chinese, Japanese, American, German, etc.
Sample:
Oyster Omelet - (For two): Take six eggs, one hundred California oysters, one small onion, one tablespoonful of butter, one tablespoonful of flour, salt and pepper to taste. Beat the eggs to a froth and stir in the onion chopped fine. Put the eggs into an omelet pan over a slow fire. Mix the flour and butter to a soft paste with a little cream, and stir in with the oysters, adding salt and pepper to taste. When the eggs begin to stiffen pour the oysters over and turn the omelet together. Serve on hot plate with a dash of paprika.
The only thing I find amazing about the above is you need 100 oysters to feed 2 people!

The Tablehopper's Guide to Dining and Drinking in San Francisco: Find the Right Spot for Every Occasion Review

The Tablehopper's Guide to Dining and Drinking in San Francisco: Find the Right Spot for Every Occasion
Average Reviews:

I have purchased 23 books for touring San Francisco. I live about 45 minutes away and I love to go there as much as I can. Marcia's book is the BEST book for me! It is all about the drinking and eating, not about sites and tourist traps. I would recommend that a tourist forgo the sites and dive straight into the heart of the city: it's unique dining establishments both swanky and funky/eclectic and the taverns, pubs and posh hotel bars. That is what SF is all about. I am giving this book as Christmas gifts to everyone I love -- if I can wait that long. Probably not.
