Obsession, Deceit and Really Dark Chocolate Review

Obsession, Deceit and Really Dark Chocolate

I've read all of Kyra Davis' books and have enjoyed them all. This is the third in the Sophie Katz series and Davis is not letting us down. She keeps the fun as well as the mystery, romance and the adreneline going. It's a well written and quite a delightful page turner with Davis' signature quirky characters. This one has an interesting and funny quasy political plot and a facinating look into a what might be called by some an alternative life style and by others a devient and rather unusual one. Check it out.

Mind her own business? Leave it to the experts? Not a chance. . . . especially when asked to spy on her friend's strangely behaving husband, Eugene, at one of San Francisco's hottest nightclubs. When Sophie shows up in a short red cocktail dress and the potentially two-timing hubby shows up dead, the would-be sleuth launches a full investigation. Without warning, Sophie plunges into a world of political mudslinging and campaign cover-ups. She uncovers some pretty dirty secrets, including a certain conservative congressional hopeful's involvement in the "Furry" community -- a group with a fetish for mascot sized animal costumes. Sex and politics, wouldn't you know? Sophie knows she needs help, and turns to P.I. (and ex-boyfriend) Anatoly Darinsky. Together they set out to discover who killed Eugene and why. Their professional relationship may be repaired, but what will this very unusual case do for their personal one? In the hilarious third book of the Sophie Katz series, Davis offers plenty of obsession, a healthy dose of deceit and a generous serving of really dark chocolate!

Forgiven Review

Kula Baker has always lived on the edge of danger with an outlaw for a father. But now that she's grown, she's ready to go out into the world and make a respectable life for herself, where hopefully she'll catch the eye of a rich young man who will marry her. But when her father refuses to leave outlawing, saying that he has one last piece of business to take care of, Kula is forced to go alone...only to witness her father being arrested for a murder he didn't commit. Kula travels to San Francisco, hoping to find a man named Ty Wong and a mysterious box that will save her father...and ends up discovering long-buried secrets about her father she never expected.

Forgiven is a fast-paced and unique historical novel, with a strong and noble protagonist. Kula is headstrong and determined to save her father, but a little naive in her methods. After a life slightly outside of the law, she's certain that marriage will give her the kind of respectability and security she craves. However, she is in for a few surprises as her romantic interests don't always go the way she plans and she falls for a Chinese man. Their romance seems a little rushed, but it is sweet and complements the more dangerous aspects of the novel as Kula searches for her father's box and in doing so, stumbles upon the darker side of turn of the century San Francisco with its human trafficking of female Chinese immigrants. That aspect, while horrifying, was a fascinating bit of history that Fox didn't expound upon nearly enough. The book ends with the great earthquake that shook the city in 1906, which hurriedly forced the book to conclude realistically, but slightly unsatisfactorily. Forgiven is a book that contains an interesting, complicated narrator and some fascinating historical tidbits, but as a whole seemed a little disjointed. The companion novel, Faithful, was a much better read.

Kula Baker never expected to find herself on the streets of San Francisco, alone but for a letter of introduction. Though she has come to the city to save her father from a cruel fate, Kula soon finds herself swept up in a world of art and elegance - a world she hardly dared dream of back in Montana, where she was no more than the daughter of an outlaw. And then there is the handsome David Wong, whose smiling eyes and soft-spoken manner have an uncanny way of breaking through Kula's carefully crafted reserve. Yet when disaster strikes and the wreckage threatens all she holds dear, Kula realizes that only by unlocking her heart can she begin to carve a new future for herself.

On Winding Hill Road (Berkley Sensation) Review

On Winding Hill Road (Berkley Sensation)

Sarah Logan flies from Santa Barbara to San Francisco to serve as a companion to thirteen years old May DeFalle. May's mom Lisa died last year in what was either an accident or suicide; her father Gatien is a Grand Prix driver away from home a lot. If Sarah thinks about the assignment, she would realize that the family starting with Lisa's sister Helene Browning wants her to be a surrogate mother to May. Sarah accepted the job because of the exorbitant salary and the incredible bonus if she stays a year.
May is unhappy with the babysitter, but Sarah does her best to help the despondent teen who only perks up when her dad is in town. Sarah also begins looking into what happened to Lisa not because she suspects anything diabolical, but only to gain a better understanding of May's needs. As her inquiries begin to gel, Sarah wonders if murder occurred and could a cuckolded Gatien have killed his wife for cheating on him. She needs to know because she is falling in love with her prime suspect her employer.
This entertaining gothic romance contains all the classic elements, but places them in modern day California with soccer playing teens and auto racing to counter an innocent heroine, a dark mansion, a brooding hero, and the suspicious death of his first wife. The story line is character driven as Sarah slowly falls in love with her employer who she believes killed his spouse. Fans of modern day gothic romantic suspense will enjoy the drive in, around, and ON WINDING HILL ROAD.

When I Fall In Love (Arabesque) Review

When I Fall In Love (Arabesque)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WIFIL was a refreshing blend of romance. It was funny and passionate with an added dose of suspense/drama.
Logan Riley is a handsome, charming eligible San Francisco Police Inspector and close friends with Sean Weston a dedicated FBI agent.
The story starts off with a lil' action on the second page "...In one smooth motion that was worthy of silver screen, Logan dropped to the ground and rolled into the apartment..." with a buildup of growing passion "... Dancing is a lot like sex. It takes the right partner."
Sean has felt like the Ugly Duckling her entire life. In comparison to her stepfamily that is. She is an FBI agent who doesn't want to be ultra feminine, until an invitation to her sisters wedding is given and she finds out she has to take an escort. Sean asks her attractive next door neighbor Logan to be her escort whom she secretly has a crush on.
Logan agrees to help Sean with her dilemma and finds himself in a silent battle with his growing feelings for her. Logan realizes that Sean is the complete opposite to his usual dates, but he finds that the old saying rings true "opposites attract."
As the two try to stop fighting their attraction to one another threats of serious danger bring them closer together. The passionate kisses and embraces they share are nothing compared to the steamy love scene that unfolds between them.
This is Ms. Sneed's third book. Like the others before she will have you laughing, crying and screaming from the first to the last page. WIFIL is a definite page turner that holds you captive with Logan and Sean's love/hate relationship along with good ole' suspense. Tamara also brings back some characters from Love Undercover so we can see what they've been up to.
If you're looking for laughter and a good book to help you unwind from a hard day. When I Fall In Love is just the book to read. I truly enjoyed WIFIL. I give it a 4+ star rating. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Sneed in the future.

Tempted by Fate (The Guardians of Destiny) Review

Tempted by Fate (The Guardians of Destiny)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tempted by Fate the third book in Kate Perry's Guardian series was mind candy, not a story that's going to stick with me forever, but it was really enjoyable while I was gobbling it down.
Willow - the Guardian of the mystical scroll of wood and endowed with all the powers that brings - is closing in on the man she has sought for years, the 'bad man' who murdered her mother. But even as she seems close to finally gaining her revenge, the man throws obstacles in her way - or rather dead bodies. As a suspect in the murders, the mysterious blond haired beauty is now on Homicide Detective Ricardo Ramirez's radar, and suddenly Rick and his black and white wordview is going to have to make room for shades of gray - because the even though Willow is not as tough as she plays it with Rick, she's definitely no angel.
I really liked both of the leads. The by-the-book Rick who has appeared throughout the series, now takes over as leading man. It is interesting to see how Rick deviates from the straight and narrow and how his ethics are tested by the woman he should arrest, but who he can't seem to resist. And the fascination is mutual for Willow even though her attraction to Rick threatens her well being as well as offering a very real potential of a life in prison. Rick and Willow have great chemistry together and 'who they are' means that they both seem so wrong for each other, so it is satisfying to watch them try to unsuccessfully to fight their visceral attraction to each other.
Even though the story would work pretty well as a stand-alone it was fun to see the other Guardians (and significant others) from the previous books in supporting roles, and I also really like several of the new side characters as well - Rick's wise and somewhat magical grandmother is great as is Willow's tech savvy business partner.
So if you are looking for a steamy read with a hot cop falling for a bad girl - who is understatedly more kick butt than many a urban fantasy leading lady, and in no way as bad as she pretends to be - Tempted by Fate may appeal to you too.

Kate Meadows is a strong Christian, a successful artist, and just getting over a bad romance. She's sworn off men. In fact she swears off them at least twice a year. Then she meets Dr. Clive Alexander, who wants her to paint a mural for the children's burn unit. Sparks fly, as the two clash over almost everything. Kate has better luck with Michael Palmier, make-up artist to the stars. He says he loves Kate, but every time she sees him he hands her a different business card from a different expert who can make her look better. He wants her to have the gap between her teeth fixed, removed a mole, highlight her hair, change from glasses to contacts. Where does a girl draw the line?
Most of us would like to change something about the way we look, so it's easy to relate to Kate. Without being preachy, Tamara Leigh drives home the point that God loves us just as we are. A very entertaining story, clever and fun.

A Girl's Best Friend (Spa Girls)
Average Reviews:

Book two of the Spa Girls Collection features Morgan Malliard, the rich jewelry heiress who, at age 29, still lives with her cold, controlling father. She has just found out, along with the rest of San Francisco, that Andy, the man she eloped with, was already married. After getting a quick annulment, she decides that all her embarrassing failures with men are due to the fact that she's never lived in "the real world." Thus begins Morgan's foray into independence, which proves more trying than she thought when she discovers that job-hunting can be humiliating, cheap shoes hurt, and it's always best to take the good car when going on long trips.
Eventually, Morgan learns that there's more to life than money and that the price she's been paying for luxury is way too high. Find out how this society girl/heiress learns how to stand on her own two feet.
The quirkiness of the characters and the surprising plot twists and turns will keep you reading this fun chick lit about three admittedly "desperate" best friends who are learning to deal with their various "issues" God's way. - Melanie Dickerson, Christian Book Previews.com

Three friends. One spa. And an infinite amount of oversharing!

From the outside, Morgan Malliard has it all: diamonds at her disposal, a willowy figure, a doting daddy, and all the elegance that money can buy. But money can't buy happiness--or an identity to call her own--and Morgan is realizing her perfect life has no purpose other than spectacular grooming (which isn't really a purpose at all . . . unless you're a chimpanzee). Then a falling-out with her father drop-kicks Morgan into the real world, and she is suddenly forced to get an actual job, wear affordable shoes, and cope with public transportation--not to mention deal with that mysterious hottie who may or may not be stalking her!

It's time for a spa getaway with her best gals, Lilly and Poppy--because there's just something about lying under a pile of sweet-smelling papaya plaster that can help a girl figure things out. Like the fact that life isn't about living up to a perfect ideal, and that with God's grace, the beauty of it may just be in the flaws after all.

While I have always remained partial to Sturman's first book in the Rachel Benjamin series, 'THE PACT' I have to regretfully admit that I now have a new favorite in this engaging series...'THE HUNT'! Not only was this installment filled with unexpected twists and turns (not only in the whodunit but also in Rachel and Peter's relationship) but it was also laugh out loud funny!
In the 'THE HUNT' Rachel finds herself, not so successfully in her opinion, trying to fit in with her super normal in-laws-to-be when her best friend Hillary seems to be abducted by a billionaire who does not want some sketchy information leaked just days before his company is supposed to go public. And journalist Hillary has collected all sorts of nasty tid-bits about this billionaire and his company and is all set to write her article when she disappears. Now it is up to Rachel and Company to find Hillary, thwart the company's endeavors to go public all the while trying to impress her soon to be in-laws! Stir all of these ingredients together and you have one hilarious concoction!
If you have enjoyed the rest of the series get ready to enjoy the best!

Midnight Star (Star Series)

If you are looking for a diversion on a rainy afternoon, this is the book for you. I bought the book in an airport when I was stuck waiting for a delayed flight, and it really made the time fly. The characters were realistic and not at all like the usual "oh, he is so handsome, so I will fall for him" sort that so many romance authors seem to create. The characters really seemed to struggle with the issues including Chauncey's need for revenge against the man she thought caused her father's death and Delaney's curiosity at her distance. The end was exciting, though the very end seemed to just lose a little steam. If you are looking for a diversion, this is a worthwhile escape for a few hours.

Being With Him Review

Being With Him
Average Reviews:

Jessica Barksdale Inclán is a new author to me and I was pretty glad when she got in touch with me about being interviewed and having her latest Second Romance series books reviewed by me. I'm a bit late in posting this review but it's better late than never and I really enjoyed reading the first book Being with Him. This is a paranormal romance that I didn't at first really understand completely because the two main characters are from another plant placed on earth for their own survival by their parents. They have a similar species to them who are after them for evil purposes that could kill them in the end because they are the ones who destroyed their planet and parents in the first place. I did really start to get the hero, Garrick, and heroine, Milla, as the novel progressed and the reason for the special abilities became more clearer to them and the reader.Milla is a very creative woman who has the ability to move time forward but she doesn't know what she missed between the time she was in the present and to the time she moved forward. So she missed minutes and hours and maybe days that she can never relive again because she can only move time forward. She also has never told anyone not even her beloved parents about her ability but that all changes for her when she is set up on a blind date with Garrick. Now Garrick is the other half of Milla because he has the ability to move time backwards and so he has relived the past over and over if he wasn't careful. But unlike Milla he told his parents that he kept reliving the past again and again as a child, which really freaked his parents out. Garrick had to spend many days and years of his childhood in mental hospitals with doctors trying to figure out what is wrong with him. Until Garrick final stopped talking about his ability did he finally get on with his life as a semi-normal man but his parents were never the same with him again. Then he met Milla on a blind date that his aunt set up for him and everything changed for him as well because they both felt that deep soul mate connection between them. That is a turning point for both Milla and Garrick in this lovely and creative tale of two halfs of one whole coming together after years of separation. But that is also the turning point where things get really hard for Milla and Garrick because they finally find out what happened to their parents and their people with the special abilities. They find out about the people who want to use them for their own nefarious purposes or they die if they don't comply. By the time I finished reading this novel I had to immediately pick up the second book to find out what happens next with Milla and her brother and sister who she just now discovered she had.

The publishing phenomenon Cathy's Book redefined the way teens approach novels and set a new standard for interactivity, using the most popular kids' technology to enhance the experience of reading a really good story. As a new chapter is about to unfold with the publication of the sequel, Cathy's Key later this spring, the original novel is available in trade paperback. All of the supplementary items from the "evidence pack" are reproduced on pages in the back of the book, making this edition more accessible and portable. All of the original websites, phone numbers, and secret codes are still operational. Part romance, part thriller, part mystery, Cathy's Book stands on its own beyond the interactive angle and the intense marketing campaign that made it a bestseller. Readers identify with Cathy, they read her story, listen to her phone messages, check out the websites she mentions, and they leave her messages on her MySpace.com page and on a special voicemail. Fans have even created their own videos on YouTube, demonstrating their comfort and familiarity with this level of interactivity and technology. Reviewers and awards committees have also recognized the unique phenomenon that reset the bar for engaging teen novels. Don't miss this opportunity to get caught up in Cathy's world all over again! Included in the paperback edition only is a special, teaser chapter from the sequel (which pubs two months later), to whet the appetite of the thousands of readers who have gotten caught up in the web of Cathy's story! If you are tired of reading Lesbian Romance where the whole point is the sex, or the author is too shy to be proud of the sexuality of her characters. Or where the problems are contrived and the ending is sappy. You've found the right harbour. SX brings quirky and realistic characters to life. Poses real life questions for them and then has us rooting for them as they make their human way toward a resolution. Every book reinforces my faith in the human family without being unrealistic and every book makes me think. The quality of the writing is professional, lively, and vivid.

A Perfect Wedding (Zebra Historical Romance)
Average Reviews:

In 1912 Marjorie MacTavish leaves Glasgow, Scotland to catch the maiden voyage of the Titanic accompanied by her fiancé. On board Marjorie befriends Loretta Quarles. Although Marjorie and Loretta survive the sinking of the Titanic, the former's fiancé dies in the tragedy.
In 1915 Marjorie resides in San Francisco where she works as secretary and personal companion to Loretta. She enjoys her work for her outspoken friend, a champion of women's suffragette, but feels Loretta's childhood friend Dr. Jason Abernathy is a nuisance and the bane of her existence. Jason enjoys teasing Marjorie, who he would like to see on a social basis, but she rejects his minor advances. He even joins the church choir to be near her. When his nursing assistant Lo Sing informs him that a tong war in Chinatown has injured many people, Jason and Marjorie go to help. As she sees a different side of the doctor, Marjorie begins to fall in love, not knowing she already owns Jason's heart.
In her third "perfect" historical romance (see A PERFECT STRANGER and A PERFECT ROMANCE), Anne Robins provides a terrific tale that enables the audience to get a close look at San Francisco just prior to the United States entering WWI. Especially intriguing is Chinatown and the treatment of Chinese including specific prejudicial racial laws aimed at control of the Asian immigrant population. The romance between the lead couple is charmingly presented even when the duo works as a team providing medical care to Chinese victims of the tong war and other racially motivated incidents. A PERFECT WEDDING is a fine early twentieth century Americana tale.

The first couple of paragraphs immediately engaged my attention and the rest of the book delivered as well. I loved how the characters and story developed, with plot twists that kept me guessing. I felt the ending wrapped everything up nicely, but also left me wanting to read more Mac Jackson stories in the future. Hard to believe this was a debut novel. I can't wait to read this author's next release.
