The Little Death Review

The Little Death
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Little Death, originally published in 1986, was the first of seven Henry Rios mysteries. The final episode, published in 2001, is entitled Rag and Bone. This series has earned Michael Nava four Lambda Literary Awards, and comparisons to some of the great writers, such as Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. Nava says he began writing The Little Death while working at the Palo Alto, California jail when he was studying for his bar exams.
Henry Rios probably earns less than one-half of what he could earn in private industry as a public defender. He is gay, is an excellent lawyer, and is used to dealing with minor offenses until Hugh Paris is picked up as an alleged drunk. The police find two PCP cigarettes on Hugh, and he resists arrest. Henry was sent down from felony trials to arraignments, which means his boss thought he was burned out and needed a rest after his last murder trial. But Henry's life is about to change drastically once again when a nocturnal visit from Hugh Paris exposes Henry to love; loss; and deception:
"The elegant body was as white as marble. I could see a dark blue vein running up the length of his arm, and a jagged red mark just beneath his armpit where the needle went in. There were bruises on his chest. His head rested on a kind of pillow. Death had robbed his face of its seductive animation but I recognized him."
The Little Death is an exquisitely written dark little mystery that will pull at the reader's heartstrings. Henry Rios is smart, determined, and instantly grows on the reader as the kind of hero who is in keeping with today's world. Michael Nava keeps his story subtle and intelligent, and it is a joy to read. He is indeed within the ranks of the characters and plot geniuses who wrote in the first half of the twentieth century. He obviously deserves to be recognized as the great writer he is.
Henry Rios is someone the reader wants to know a lot more about. Michael Nava's craftsmanship is an English major's delight. Justice would be served if Mr. Nava's name appeared on the best seller's list. He has much to teach.

Henry Rios is introduced as a troubled San Francisco public defender battling alcoholism and burnout. While investigating the murder of an old friend, he traces clues back to the man's own wealthy family. It is here that we first encounter Henry Rios's struggle to maintain his faith in a legal system caught between justice and corruption, a theme that will continue throughout the series.

Obsession, Deceit and Really Dark Chocolate Review

I've read all of Kyra Davis' books and have enjoyed them all. This is the third in the Sophie Katz series and Davis is not letting us down. She keeps the fun as well as the mystery, romance and the adreneline going. It's a well written and quite a delightful page turner with Davis' signature quirky characters. This one has an interesting and funny quasy political plot and a facinating look into a what might be called by some an alternative life style and by others a devient and rather unusual one. Check it out.

Mind her own business? Leave it to the experts? Not a chance. . . . especially when asked to spy on her friend's strangely behaving husband, Eugene, at one of San Francisco's hottest nightclubs. When Sophie shows up in a short red cocktail dress and the potentially two-timing hubby shows up dead, the would-be sleuth launches a full investigation. Without warning, Sophie plunges into a world of political mudslinging and campaign cover-ups. She uncovers some pretty dirty secrets, including a certain conservative congressional hopeful's involvement in the "Furry" community -- a group with a fetish for mascot sized animal costumes. Sex and politics, wouldn't you know? Sophie knows she needs help, and turns to P.I. (and ex-boyfriend) Anatoly Darinsky. Together they set out to discover who killed Eugene and why. Their professional relationship may be repaired, but what will this very unusual case do for their personal one? In the hilarious third book of the Sophie Katz series, Davis offers plenty of obsession, a healthy dose of deceit and a generous serving of really dark chocolate!

Kate Austen is an amateur sleuth, school teacher and mother, so I was expecting a light, maybe even frothy read. To my great delight, it wasn't. It offered more substance instead. The story moves along quickly and there are flashes of humor, but it's subtle humor. The characters seemed very real to me, and the storyline very believable. Kate's relationship with her daughters, her signifiant other and her mother-in-law were all developed and felt right. I intend to search out the author's other books.

The Hunt (Red Dress Ink) Review

The Hunt (Red Dress Ink)

While I have always remained partial to Sturman's first book in the Rachel Benjamin series, 'THE PACT' I have to regretfully admit that I now have a new favorite in this engaging series...'THE HUNT'! Not only was this installment filled with unexpected twists and turns (not only in the whodunit but also in Rachel and Peter's relationship) but it was also laugh out loud funny!
In the 'THE HUNT' Rachel finds herself, not so successfully in her opinion, trying to fit in with her super normal in-laws-to-be when her best friend Hillary seems to be abducted by a billionaire who does not want some sketchy information leaked just days before his company is supposed to go public. And journalist Hillary has collected all sorts of nasty tid-bits about this billionaire and his company and is all set to write her article when she disappears. Now it is up to Rachel and Company to find Hillary, thwart the company's endeavors to go public all the while trying to impress her soon to be in-laws! Stir all of these ingredients together and you have one hilarious concoction!
If you have enjoyed the rest of the series get ready to enjoy the best!

Death in North Beach (A Carly Paladino and Noah Lang Mystery) Review

Death in North Beach (A Carly Paladino and Noah Lang Mystery)

In his newest San Francisco based thriller author Ronald Tierney takes us on a ride through the seamy side San Francisco's art and politics world with many interesting and eclectic characters. the son, the wife, the mistress, the journalist, the companion, the photographer, the rival writer, the Private Investigator, the painter, the real estate developer, the Politician. And a few more
Private Investigator Carly Paladino is asked to prove a mans innocence in the murder of writer Whitney Warfield before he has been charged with a crime. With a lengthy list of possible suspects she enlists the help of Noah Lang. Lang, and Paladino work their way through the complex character list. As they work their way through the list the story becomes complex. They follow many leads and intuitions some appear to be dead ends but maybe not. As you read through the book some characters that you would think could be eliminated might come back into play later. Many people wanted him dead so that their indiscretions would stay a secret. The question is who wanted it more, the son, the wife, the mistress, the journalist, the companion, the photographer, the rival writer, the Private Investigator, the painter, the real estate developer, the Politician. So many to choose from.
While most of the character development of Carly Paladino and Noah Lange was done in the first book "Death in Pacific Heights" there is still enough in this book to give the reader good insight to the Paladino and Lang characters. Tierney does an excellent job of story telling though his interesting and entertaining characters and places. Like "Death in Pacific Heights" he uses real places in San Francisco and describes them to a tee.. When the characters walk into a restaurant Tierney describes the ambiance of the room, the social and economic make-up of the surrounding area.. His writing style really puts you in that place.
Tierney really keeps the suspense flowing through out the book.. He takes the reader on a lot of unexpected twists and turns. In the end he brings these twists and turns together masterfully The way that Tierney closes this mystery is just so riveting. I highly recommend this book.

Snowman (Beach Reading) Review

Snowman (Beach Reading)

When body parts were found in the sewer pipes at the Castro restaurant where Tim Snow usually works, he was just recovering from injuries suffered in his last adventure with "bad guys." His boyfriend Nick, helping out the gay owners of the restaurant, made the discovery, but it is Tim's Aunt Ruth and Nicki's author grandmother, Amanda Musgrove, who stumble on the possible crime scene, and lead the police to investigate possible leads to drug runners in the area. Meanwhile, Tim is trying his best to deal with his bigoted Texas cousin, Ruth's daughter Dianne, but can't resist goading her into confrontations about his being gay. Ruth is giving Dianne as much space as possible as well, choosing to spend as much time as possible with her fiancé, Sam.
In this fourth of his "Beach Reading" series of mysteries, the author creates one heck of a suspenseful page turner, featuring the characters already endeared to those of us who read the earlier books in the series. (While reading them all in order is not a must, as Abramson provides sufficient detail for "newbies" to catch up on what they need to know, I do indeed recommend reading them all, as this is absolutely the best gay mystery series to come along in at least a decade!) As always, the writing takes you to the Castro instantly, and you can almost smell the sourdough bread! Five perfect stars out of five.

Brink Review

'BRINK' BY RICHARD WHITTEN BARNES
Clear the day, brew up some coffee and settle in for an exciting read you won't be able to put down. I was hooked from the first paragraph in the foreword of `Brink' by Richard Whitten Barnes, his latest mystery novel with a twist of romance. This book is fast paced action that guarantees a wild ride as you explore the world of Dr. Ben Posner who falls from grace, loses his job, as well as, his house and hits the bottle hard. You'll find yourself captivated by this decent man who fights his way through his problems, gets his life on the road to normalcy once again, only to be charged with murder. He is supported by a fascinating cast of characters, especially Angela Bell, Dr. Yang, his wife Annie and Posner's son Michael. Getting to know all of them was a real treat as they struggle to help Dr. Posner.
Barnes novel 'Brink' is a page turner. I raced to the end trying to figure out the murderer with a long list of viable suspects. I found myself rooting for Ben Posner and hoping he would finally be able to turn his life around. The sweet romance in the book is an added bonus.
I highly recommend this book. It is a great read and you won't be disappointed. In fact, you'll be thrilled you had the chance to get to know his array of fascinating people. I'll be looking forward to Barnes next novel.

The Big Wake-Up Review

The Big Wake-Up

Another suspenseful and funny mystery from Mark Coggins. The adventure begins when San Francisco private eye August Riordan witnesses a murderous rampage that couldn't happen in any other city. This event draws him into a search for an important body that is coveted by a collection of mysterious (and at times ruthless) South Americans. Along the way, this private eye had me laughing out loud with one sarcastic remark after another. An entertaining page turner, no question about it.

Love.com Review

It's hard to find a romantic suspense that is not formulaic these days but Love.com brought this fan of the genre and professional librarian/book reviewer lots of surprises. When a seemingly innocent enterprise of an online matchmaking service takes on sinister and controlling overtones the folks both running and using it are shocked at the results in their own lives. Marsha is a sympathetic naive business lady who is having trouble staying ahead of spoiled Paul who designed this venture mainly to get her. The futuristic and chemical twists gave this story a great suspenseful edge. The minor character stories of folks who meet through Love.com are fun breaks from the action. This great read on my Kindle took me out of a miserable flu for hours without pulling me from the story. I'm looking forward to the author's next one!
