Sarah Logan flies from Santa Barbara to San Francisco to serve as a companion to thirteen years old May DeFalle. May's mom Lisa died last year in what was either an accident or suicide; her father Gatien is a Grand Prix driver away from home a lot. If Sarah thinks about the assignment, she would realize that the family starting with Lisa's sister Helene Browning wants her to be a surrogate mother to May. Sarah accepted the job because of the exorbitant salary and the incredible bonus if she stays a year.
May is unhappy with the babysitter, but Sarah does her best to help the despondent teen who only perks up when her dad is in town. Sarah also begins looking into what happened to Lisa not because she suspects anything diabolical, but only to gain a better understanding of May's needs. As her inquiries begin to gel, Sarah wonders if murder occurred and could a cuckolded Gatien have killed his wife for cheating on him. She needs to know because she is falling in love with her prime suspect her employer.
This entertaining gothic romance contains all the classic elements, but places them in modern day California with soccer playing teens and auto racing to counter an innocent heroine, a dark mansion, a brooding hero, and the suspicious death of his first wife. The story line is character driven as Sarah slowly falls in love with her employer who she believes killed his spouse. Fans of modern day gothic romantic suspense will enjoy the drive in, around, and ON WINDING HILL ROAD.

Cold Serial Murder (Beach Reading) Review

Cold Serial Murder (Beach Reading)

When Tim Snow's Aunt Ruth comes to visit him in San Francisco, she is expecting to relax and reconnect with her nephew, as well as her favorite City by the Bay. On the first day of her visit, Tim discovers the bloody body of his former lover, Jason, and a co-worker at Art's, a restaurant and bar in the Castro. It turns out to be the first of several stabbings, including another one from Tim's circle of acquaintances, apparently the work of a serial killer on which the police have no leads. One of the murders ironically provides an opportunity for Aunt Ruth to consider relocating to San Francisco permanently, but she is more worried about keeping Tim and his friends safe from harm. Can Tim's untrained psychic abilities provide a lead, or are Aunt Ruth's gut feelings about one of his neighbors the better judge of a likely suspect?
In this second of his "Beach Reading" series of light thrillers, Abramson further develops the likeable and relatable characters he introduced in that enjoyable first book (same name as the series), and again provides a story that perfectly captures the cohesive spirit of the Castro community. While mystery purists may prefer a few more "red herrings" to complicate the solving of the crime, the author obviously intends for the series to entertain rather than challenge, and it succeeds wonderfully on that level. A clang from a streetcar, and five golden stars out of five!

Fatal Truth Review

This is book 2 in the Inspector Kate Gillespie series, and this book is great! The character's are complex, the mystery has more dips and loops than a rollar coaster, and the scenery is fabulous! (Well maybe I am a bit partial- they visit my town ;0). Sexy IA Investigator Torrance is back heating up the pages, and leaving us wishing for more.
In this book Kate finds herself in the middle of corruption in the department (and higher?). She doesn't know which of her fellow officer's she can trust, and which are out to make her a silent witness. Who is on her side? Who is being framed? Who sold out on his badge? At least she can trust Torrance.... or can she?
A fast, enjoyable read, Robin Burcell scores a hit here. She writes from knowledge, as a cop and a woman, and gives us a female star we could all be proud of!

Love.com Review

It's hard to find a romantic suspense that is not formulaic these days but Love.com brought this fan of the genre and professional librarian/book reviewer lots of surprises. When a seemingly innocent enterprise of an online matchmaking service takes on sinister and controlling overtones the folks both running and using it are shocked at the results in their own lives. Marsha is a sympathetic naive business lady who is having trouble staying ahead of spoiled Paul who designed this venture mainly to get her. The futuristic and chemical twists gave this story a great suspenseful edge. The minor character stories of folks who meet through Love.com are fun breaks from the action. This great read on my Kindle took me out of a miserable flu for hours without pulling me from the story. I'm looking forward to the author's next one!
