Scanguards Vampires, Book 2
Another winner by Tina Folsom! I enjoyed this book as much as the first book in the Scanguards Vampires series, Samson's Lovely Mortal, where we are first introduced to Amaury. He is Samson's friend and works for him in Samson's security company. He was an enjoyable character in a bad boy way in the first book and I was glad to see he was the focus of the second book.
Amaury is your typical alpha hero but he becomes a big ole softy with Nina. He is protective in that yummy growly way we love to see in our alpha heroes, but Nina is constantly fighting Amaury's need to protect her. She is independent and stubborn and a good match for Amaury. Because of her past she is distrustful of men and resists her attraction to him almost to the end.
As with the first book, the romance between Amaury and Nina includes some snuggling, canoodling and talking, as well as hot sex scenes. Again, the author has done a great job in this area with a hot erotic romance that balances the sex with a suspenseful story while creating a sizzling connection between the main characters.
The secondary characters are also enjoyable and I look forward to their future stories. I like that Samson and Delilah have a fairly significant role in this book. It gives me a sense of their continuing story. I get to see the other secondary characters that I enjoyed in the first book as well and some new characters are introduced who I'm sure we will see in the future. Since the characters do carry over from one book to another, I recommend reading this series in order so you can understand the references and relationships between the characters.
Tina Folsom is officially on my watch list! I eagerly look forward to the next book in this series and her new Greek Gods series coming out this Fall.

Demon Angel (The Guardians, Book 1) Review

Demon Angel (The Guardians, Book 1)

* WARNING: SPOILERS*
I'm not even sure how to write a review for this novel. Anything I can say to describe it will fall far short of what should be said. The skill with which Meljean Brook created her characters, the world they inhabit, their conflict and their romance is so far superior to most books I've read that I'm amazed.
In Demon Angel, Lilith and Hugh meet and begin their journey in 13th century England. And theirs is definitely a journey. You won't find two dimensional characters here, without conflict or real motivation or personality. Instead, you'll get to know two very different, very complicated people who change and evolve just as time, their lives and their understanding of the world and themselves do. In the beginning, I wasn't sure if I really liked Lilith. She's a demon, after all- manipulative, hurtful, vengeful, only looking out for herself. I quickly changed my opinion, though. On the other hand, Hugh was immediately likeable. He was honorable, loyal and kind, but terribly naive and idealistic. When they meet, both are immediately fascinated by the other. It was because of Hugh's inner strength and goodness that made Lilith want to corrupt him- to damn him and his soul for eternity. Hugh, however, saw through her lies and tricks and her scales and talons and believed he could save her soul.
The first part of the book is the story of Lilith's part in Hugh's death- his sacrifice to save another. It's also the story of his time as a Guardian and the eight hundred years he went up against Lilith in fight after fight- always struggling against his desire for her as he searched for a way to save her. The second half of the book takes place after hundreds of years of fighting, but failing to save Lilith have changed him into a different man. He had become tormented, and defeated and despaired over the purpose of his life. Deciding the time had come and believing he had no other options, he tried saving Lilith the only way he knew- he killed her and Fell- turned human. Sixteen years go by before he realizes his mistake- Lilith did not die. The second half begins in modern day San Francisco when Hugh and Lilith meet up again- this time to fight together to save the city and the world from the demons and the nosferatu attempting to take over.
I cannot say enough good things about Demon Angel- except for the cover, please don't let it deter you from reading this book. Demon Angel has not only a great story with plenty of action, but it also has two fully developed characters who change and evolve over an eight hundred year period. Sometimes in romance books, I'm left wondering what exactly made the hero and heroine fall in love because they certainly didn't know each other very well. That is certainly not the case here. Hugh and Lilith know each other better than anyone else on Heaven(Caelum actually), Hell or Earth. Their romance is tragic and heartbreaking at times, but so compelling that I had to struggle to put the book down even when I finished reading the last page. It was, simply put, wonderful.

Shadow Magic (Magic Series, Book 4) Review

Shadow Magic (Magic Series, Book 4)

I strongly suggest the previous books in this series (Forbidden Magic, Seduced by Magic and Wicked Magic) be read before tackling this book. I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. I've been waiting for the day that Garren met his match! Hannah, a D'Anu witch and Garren, the Drow King make a dynamic duo. Garren is brave and honorable; however, he and his people are often misunderstood. Hannah, is strong-willed, intelligent and a warrior in her own right. Ceithlenn set off a destructive chain of events when she successfully opened a door to the Underworld and freed her husband Balor. The witches and warriors are outnumbered and outgunned. The Formorii infiltrate top level positions in the government and have basically taken over running the city. Darkwolf and Junga have enshrouded Balor's eye in Darkwolf's powerful magic, making it virtually undetectable by Balor. Balor without his power is one angry god. Under Ceithlenn's dominion chaos and destruction reign; Garren puts his life and throne on the line attempting to defeat the goddess and get redemption in the eyes of the fae and witches for his people. The story had a flair of predictability, but was nonetheless engrossing and exciting. Two things that bothered me about this novel were how easily and often the D'Dannen and witches accused Garren of double-crossing them and how all characters involved call Ceithlenn "that B*** goddess". It grated on my nerves that Ceith is constantly called the B-word. She's a formidable nemesis, who is tough, merciless and unyielding, not a "B". This story had the same amounts of sex as the previous novels but at the same time there was a lot more development and "story" than the previous books. I would consider this book a hybrid between dark urban fantasy and dark paranormal romance. I highly recommend this book and series to those dark urban fantasy readers who have patience to sift through the many sex scenes to stick with the marvelous plot. To be honest I read more of these scenes than in previous novels. Garren and Hanneh had electrifying passion and chemistry; I just couldn't look away. I also look forward to reading the next book in the series, Dark Magic.
I also recommend:
Darkfever (Fever Series, Book 1)
Storm Born (Dark Swan, Book 1)
Pleasure Unbound (Demonica, Book 1)
The Outlaw Demon Wails (The Hollows, Book 6)
Witchling (Sisters of the Moon, Book 1)

Tempted by Fate (The Guardians of Destiny) Review

Tempted by Fate (The Guardians of Destiny)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tempted by Fate the third book in Kate Perry's Guardian series was mind candy, not a story that's going to stick with me forever, but it was really enjoyable while I was gobbling it down.
Willow - the Guardian of the mystical scroll of wood and endowed with all the powers that brings - is closing in on the man she has sought for years, the 'bad man' who murdered her mother. But even as she seems close to finally gaining her revenge, the man throws obstacles in her way - or rather dead bodies. As a suspect in the murders, the mysterious blond haired beauty is now on Homicide Detective Ricardo Ramirez's radar, and suddenly Rick and his black and white wordview is going to have to make room for shades of gray - because the even though Willow is not as tough as she plays it with Rick, she's definitely no angel.
I really liked both of the leads. The by-the-book Rick who has appeared throughout the series, now takes over as leading man. It is interesting to see how Rick deviates from the straight and narrow and how his ethics are tested by the woman he should arrest, but who he can't seem to resist. And the fascination is mutual for Willow even though her attraction to Rick threatens her well being as well as offering a very real potential of a life in prison. Rick and Willow have great chemistry together and 'who they are' means that they both seem so wrong for each other, so it is satisfying to watch them try to unsuccessfully to fight their visceral attraction to each other.
Even though the story would work pretty well as a stand-alone it was fun to see the other Guardians (and significant others) from the previous books in supporting roles, and I also really like several of the new side characters as well - Rick's wise and somewhat magical grandmother is great as is Willow's tech savvy business partner.
So if you are looking for a steamy read with a hot cop falling for a bad girl - who is understatedly more kick butt than many a urban fantasy leading lady, and in no way as bad as she pretends to be - Tempted by Fate may appeal to you too.

Finger's Breadth Review

Finger's Breadth
Average Reviews:

To be effective, the act of literary intercourse between horror and erotica should be deeply unsettling. It should leave the reader feeling excited by uncomfortable, overwhelmed by equal parts dread and anticipation. If you've ever read any of his work, you know M. Christian understands this better than most. With his latest, he has woven a tale that permits the reader but a finger's breadth of space between fear and arousal. His deft control of the story makes us feel the blade of the assailant, but it's his subtle manipulation of our emotions that makes us desire the cut of the victim.
The story starts out with simple, if deliciously perverse, premise. A mysterious figure is haunting the underground community of San Francisco, abducting young gay men and cutting off the tip of their little finger. As creepy and unsettling as the abductions are, it's what comes after that comprises the bulk of the story. It's a testament to M. Christian's writing skill that, no matter how creepy or weird it gets, we're encouraged to embrace the guiltiest of pleasures by indulging in the tale. In the end, we're so deeply involved that we can't pull away from the final horrors ahead, but are left instead delighted and deliciously spent.

The city is terrified. Someone is haunting the streets of near-future San Francisco, drugging queer men and amputating the tip of their little finger. But worse than this is how the terror transforms the men of the city. For what's worse-a monster, or that something can, all too easily, turn any of us into something even more horrific?Erotic. Terrifying. Fascinating. Disturbing. Intriguing. Haunting. You have never read a book like Finger's Breadth. You will never look at your fingers, or the people around you, the same way again.

Midnight Star (Star Series) Review

If you are looking for a diversion on a rainy afternoon, this is the book for you. I bought the book in an airport when I was stuck waiting for a delayed flight, and it really made the time fly. The characters were realistic and not at all like the usual "oh, he is so handsome, so I will fall for him" sort that so many romance authors seem to create. The characters really seemed to struggle with the issues including Chauncey's need for revenge against the man she thought caused her father's death and Delaney's curiosity at her distance. The end was exciting, though the very end seemed to just lose a little steam. If you are looking for a diversion, this is a worthwhile escape for a few hours.

Being With Him Review

Being With Him
Average Reviews:

Jessica Barksdale Inclán is a new author to me and I was pretty glad when she got in touch with me about being interviewed and having her latest Second Romance series books reviewed by me. I'm a bit late in posting this review but it's better late than never and I really enjoyed reading the first book Being with Him. This is a paranormal romance that I didn't at first really understand completely because the two main characters are from another plant placed on earth for their own survival by their parents. They have a similar species to them who are after them for evil purposes that could kill them in the end because they are the ones who destroyed their planet and parents in the first place. I did really start to get the hero, Garrick, and heroine, Milla, as the novel progressed and the reason for the special abilities became more clearer to them and the reader.Milla is a very creative woman who has the ability to move time forward but she doesn't know what she missed between the time she was in the present and to the time she moved forward. So she missed minutes and hours and maybe days that she can never relive again because she can only move time forward. She also has never told anyone not even her beloved parents about her ability but that all changes for her when she is set up on a blind date with Garrick. Now Garrick is the other half of Milla because he has the ability to move time backwards and so he has relived the past over and over if he wasn't careful. But unlike Milla he told his parents that he kept reliving the past again and again as a child, which really freaked his parents out. Garrick had to spend many days and years of his childhood in mental hospitals with doctors trying to figure out what is wrong with him. Until Garrick final stopped talking about his ability did he finally get on with his life as a semi-normal man but his parents were never the same with him again. Then he met Milla on a blind date that his aunt set up for him and everything changed for him as well because they both felt that deep soul mate connection between them. That is a turning point for both Milla and Garrick in this lovely and creative tale of two halfs of one whole coming together after years of separation. But that is also the turning point where things get really hard for Milla and Garrick because they finally find out what happened to their parents and their people with the special abilities. They find out about the people who want to use them for their own nefarious purposes or they die if they don't comply. By the time I finished reading this novel I had to immediately pick up the second book to find out what happens next with Milla and her brother and sister who she just now discovered she had.
