Scanguards Vampires, Book 2
Another winner by Tina Folsom! I enjoyed this book as much as the first book in the Scanguards Vampires series, Samson's Lovely Mortal, where we are first introduced to Amaury. He is Samson's friend and works for him in Samson's security company. He was an enjoyable character in a bad boy way in the first book and I was glad to see he was the focus of the second book.
Amaury is your typical alpha hero but he becomes a big ole softy with Nina. He is protective in that yummy growly way we love to see in our alpha heroes, but Nina is constantly fighting Amaury's need to protect her. She is independent and stubborn and a good match for Amaury. Because of her past she is distrustful of men and resists her attraction to him almost to the end.
As with the first book, the romance between Amaury and Nina includes some snuggling, canoodling and talking, as well as hot sex scenes. Again, the author has done a great job in this area with a hot erotic romance that balances the sex with a suspenseful story while creating a sizzling connection between the main characters.
The secondary characters are also enjoyable and I look forward to their future stories. I like that Samson and Delilah have a fairly significant role in this book. It gives me a sense of their continuing story. I get to see the other secondary characters that I enjoyed in the first book as well and some new characters are introduced who I'm sure we will see in the future. Since the characters do carry over from one book to another, I recommend reading this series in order so you can understand the references and relationships between the characters.
Tina Folsom is officially on my watch list! I eagerly look forward to the next book in this series and her new Greek Gods series coming out this Fall.

Demon Angel (The Guardians, Book 1) Review

Demon Angel (The Guardians, Book 1)

* WARNING: SPOILERS*
I'm not even sure how to write a review for this novel. Anything I can say to describe it will fall far short of what should be said. The skill with which Meljean Brook created her characters, the world they inhabit, their conflict and their romance is so far superior to most books I've read that I'm amazed.
In Demon Angel, Lilith and Hugh meet and begin their journey in 13th century England. And theirs is definitely a journey. You won't find two dimensional characters here, without conflict or real motivation or personality. Instead, you'll get to know two very different, very complicated people who change and evolve just as time, their lives and their understanding of the world and themselves do. In the beginning, I wasn't sure if I really liked Lilith. She's a demon, after all- manipulative, hurtful, vengeful, only looking out for herself. I quickly changed my opinion, though. On the other hand, Hugh was immediately likeable. He was honorable, loyal and kind, but terribly naive and idealistic. When they meet, both are immediately fascinated by the other. It was because of Hugh's inner strength and goodness that made Lilith want to corrupt him- to damn him and his soul for eternity. Hugh, however, saw through her lies and tricks and her scales and talons and believed he could save her soul.
The first part of the book is the story of Lilith's part in Hugh's death- his sacrifice to save another. It's also the story of his time as a Guardian and the eight hundred years he went up against Lilith in fight after fight- always struggling against his desire for her as he searched for a way to save her. The second half of the book takes place after hundreds of years of fighting, but failing to save Lilith have changed him into a different man. He had become tormented, and defeated and despaired over the purpose of his life. Deciding the time had come and believing he had no other options, he tried saving Lilith the only way he knew- he killed her and Fell- turned human. Sixteen years go by before he realizes his mistake- Lilith did not die. The second half begins in modern day San Francisco when Hugh and Lilith meet up again- this time to fight together to save the city and the world from the demons and the nosferatu attempting to take over.
I cannot say enough good things about Demon Angel- except for the cover, please don't let it deter you from reading this book. Demon Angel has not only a great story with plenty of action, but it also has two fully developed characters who change and evolve over an eight hundred year period. Sometimes in romance books, I'm left wondering what exactly made the hero and heroine fall in love because they certainly didn't know each other very well. That is certainly not the case here. Hugh and Lilith know each other better than anyone else on Heaven(Caelum actually), Hell or Earth. Their romance is tragic and heartbreaking at times, but so compelling that I had to struggle to put the book down even when I finished reading the last page. It was, simply put, wonderful.

With so many dead bodies, this could have been depressing. It
wasn't! Touching and funny at the same time, In All the Silent
Manliness by Lou Kief is a good story, beautifully told.

Like thousands of young and not-so-young men before him, Barry Lowe ran away.He ran from exhaustion of keeping a secret life from his family and friends. He ran from the fear of disappointing his parents and facing their wrath. He ran from the rejection of the first man he dared to love.He ran from the sickening smells and sounds of the funeral home where he had been raised. But most of all, he ran as fast as he could from the body of his wife on the embalming table. He knew the time had passed when he could hide the truth of who he was.In All The Silent Manliness is the story of Barry Lowe's escape to the San Francisco of the 1970s. It follows him to the Castro and watches as he tries to drown himself and his memories in a life of alcohol and sex peppered with just enough carpentry work to keep him alive. When his brother is killed in a car accident, Barry makes a reluctant trip back home to help his ailing father and mother handle the funeral for their youngest son.In the five days he's there he relives his childhood in that same building, recalling memories of the funniest and most bizarre things he experienced. Returning to Castro Street, he finds he has becomes a more mature, understanding person, ready to live a life as a proud, openly gay man.In All The Silent Manliness is a powerful, deeply touching, laugh-out-loud story of self-discovery, acceptance, forgiveness and redemption. The novel is fast moving and forces readers to surrender to the unpredictability of what is coming around the next corner.

Ghosts of San Francisco Review

Ghosts of San Francisco
Average Reviews:

Kathryn Vercillo's book is a mishmash of stories and articles she has gathered in gathering evidence of the ghostly haunts of San Francisco city proper.
The book is broken down into a narrative style, with the most interesting ghost stories about the various mansions, bridges and streets that may still be haunted, some brief synopses from a psychic or two such as Silvia Browne, and a very long bibliography at the end.
What's annoying are the references to the various quotations she places throughout the book. For example, you're reading along and then see (Richards, 1995). What the heck does that mean? I know that I would jump to the bibliography and it's great that she gives credit where due, but it would have worked better to have a footnote section.
Despite this quibble, the stories are fun to read and make me want to go right out there and find some ghosts.
I've always been interested in the woman who has been looking for her drowned children at Stow Lake since 1916, or the policeman who has been giving tickets to motorists in Golden Gate Park, except he's been dead now for many years.
Addresses and names are given, such as Room 410 of the Queen Anne Hotel is still haunted by a ghost who used to teach a boarding school for girls. The book is heavy on hotels.
The last sections deal with the state of mind and equipment to set up your own ghost hunt, warning not to disturb the living as you seek out the undead. Oh boy!
It reads as a short reference work more than a detailed locations book and should be treated as such. The author spoon feeds you these brief stories which is cool.
Recommended.
