Another winner by Tina Folsom! I enjoyed this book as much as the first book in the Scanguards Vampires series, Samson's Lovely Mortal, where we are first introduced to Amaury. He is Samson's friend and works for him in Samson's security company. He was an enjoyable character in a bad boy way in the first book and I was glad to see he was the focus of the second book.
Amaury is your typical alpha hero but he becomes a big ole softy with Nina. He is protective in that yummy growly way we love to see in our alpha heroes, but Nina is constantly fighting Amaury's need to protect her. She is independent and stubborn and a good match for Amaury. Because of her past she is distrustful of men and resists her attraction to him almost to the end.
As with the first book, the romance between Amaury and Nina includes some snuggling, canoodling and talking, as well as hot sex scenes. Again, the author has done a great job in this area with a hot erotic romance that balances the sex with a suspenseful story while creating a sizzling connection between the main characters.
The secondary characters are also enjoyable and I look forward to their future stories. I like that Samson and Delilah have a fairly significant role in this book. It gives me a sense of their continuing story. I get to see the other secondary characters that I enjoyed in the first book as well and some new characters are introduced who I'm sure we will see in the future. Since the characters do carry over from one book to another, I recommend reading this series in order so you can understand the references and relationships between the characters.
Tina Folsom is officially on my watch list! I eagerly look forward to the next book in this series and her new Greek Gods series coming out this Fall.

Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story Review

(More customer reviews)Quick personal note; My wife and I have twin 18 month old boys. I stay home with them during the day and work until 1:30 AM. Time is at a premium in my life right now. There's not much to spare and whatever spare time I can get a hold of would most likely be better spent sleeping. That being said, Christopher Moore's Blood Sucking Fiends hooked me the first night I opened the cover and kept me up until nearly 4AM.
I am a long time fan of horror and it would take quite some book to unnerve me to the point of insomnia. It wasn't a late night case of the heeby-jeebies that kept me up. It was the laughter and engaging characters. Moore has a relaxed witty style that translates to a very fast read. All of the characters in Fiends are incredibly likeable (save one) and the story is humorous and engaging. This fresh take on the joys and advantages of being a vampire set in San Franscisco made me want to walk the city and see the sites. I longed to meet a vivacious red-headed blood sucker who would set me up in an apartment and treat me like a cross between Stoker's Renfield and one of Cher's boy toys. I wanted to take the emperor to lunch with his dogs and become engaged to seven Chinese brothers so they could get their green cards. I wanted to work late nights stocking shelves in a supermarket and go bowling with frozen turkeys. (Oh, wait a sec. I have worked in a supermarket overnight and Moore knows exactly what goes on there.)
Christopher Moore weaves all of the above seamlessly and with great humor and affection to create one of the most enjoyable reads of recent memory. More Moore is on it's way to my house as we speak and I can't wait to read his advice on "Practical Demonkeeping" and see what happens in his world when a giant reptile is awakened by radioactive waste in "The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove".I may have a new favorite author.

In the early `70s, he was an active member of the notorious Weathermen. Assumed dead for 30 years, Warren Ritter, latter-day, anarchist, makes a living reading Tarot cards on Telegraph Ave. in Berkley, California.
Now, fifty-five years old, he has a comfortable life: frequent forays into book stores for poetic sustenance, once a month to the shooting range with his favorite cop on the beat, cruising at 90 mph on an Aprilia RSV Mille motorcycle, and therapy sessions for manic depression on Wednesday's.
When out of no-where his older sister, Tara, discovers he is still alive, on the same day he gave an ominous reading to young, Heather Wellington, who has been kidnapped: it rocks his world.
Trying to still his fears, salvage his anonymity, life-style, and fend off an inevitable guilt trip, Warren tries to assuage Tara's outrage. But he's shocked to find out he has a daughter, and about to become a grandfather.
Panic escalates when Heather's mother also disappears. Then one of the victims is found murdered. Since both women were last seen in the company of Warren, he becomes a suspect.
Having the police and F.B.I. nosing around in his violent past just isn't cricket. Newly birthed with paternal feelings and pricked with guilt, Warren-anti-establishment-Ritter, the hunted, becomes the hunter.

David Skibbins' development of the characters and their interaction is well-crafted. But, the first-person musings of Warren Ritter are priceless. More than once I winced at his cheeky sarcasm.
Although some readers' recollection of the infamous Weathermen may be a little rusty, Warren's past affiliation with them was an integral part of his character profile. As more information about their activities is divulged, a better understanding of the depth of his fear of being caught and an appreciation of Warren's diverse capabilities is realized.
A fragile art that can't be forced, writing humor effectively is elusive to some scribes. In EIGHT OF SWORDS, subtle glimpses to brazen, in-your-face laughs stalk the pages. I can't remember the last tome I read that tickled my funny bone so well, so often. Yet, it did not clash with the killer / survival instincts Warren needed to "kick butt" and bring the murder mystery to an "anti-establishment" conclusion. You gotta' love him.
Get ready. Don your leathers. Grab your helmet. Straddle that chrome pony, (careful: hot pipes!) A new dude in town has just been jump-started. Name: Warren Ritter, he's over fifty, revved and long over-due.
It's about time.

Run to Me Review

(More customer reviews)I liked "Love on Location" by this author more. But this book was one that will slip effortlessly in among the average quality of lesbian romances, and likely charm those who pick it up.
The writing and editing was a little loose for me to give the book really high marks. Beth flees to San Francisco to train for its half-marathon after the abrupt and painful end of a 3-year relationship in LA. There she spontaneously rents a room from a quirky cast of characters and removed from her old life begins an emotional recovery process. She meets Mary, whom everyone loves and who seems to love everyone, and they strike immediate sparks, but Beth is wary of being cheated on, and Mary has been shying away from serious relationships for years. Determined to keep it casual, they begin to train for the race together, furiously attempting to resist all impulses to take their relationship deeper.
The reader spends the vast majority of the book inside Beth's head and thoughts. I like a rich internal voice, so that was good.
Except Beth had a tendency to think one thing one scene, then think something in direct opposition in the next. She'd make a decision, then ponder contradictory thoughts without referencing that decision. Perhaps the author meant to portray the disorganized jumble of one's thoughts as their mind and body war with one another, but it would have meant more if the tenor of the thoughts and contradictions had changed as Beth recovered. Instead she hashed and rehashed the same thoughts over and over, and they began to manifest in confusing actions, and also to be boring. I kept thinking, "Didn't we already go over this...more than once?" This led to the character repeatedly creating her own drama. Not something I generally enjoy.
Thankfully we also got a bit from Mary's point of view, which was usually clearer, and helped express the confusion this reader was feeling at Beth's mixed signals. There were sweet and hot moments as their relationship stuttered along. And despite Beth's clothes unaccountable disappearing in one such hot scene, it wasn't too hard to overlook the frustrating moments as the author brought her novel to a decent close, wrapping up events in a satisfying manner.
I liked the additional psychology the author brought to this book, compared to "Love on Location." She also shook up her formula a touch, which isn't a bad thing. So far I'm a fan. Hopefully she tightens up the characterizations a bit in her next work, but I'm interested to see what she does next. It's a solid, quick read, and I expect the vast majority of those who take the time to read this book will be entertained enough to consider it time well-spent.
