Mozart's Blood Review

Mozart's Blood
Average Reviews:

She is over 200 years old. Her name is Octavia Voss, and she is an Opera Diva renowned around the world. Her voice is that of an angel, sweet, yet powerful. Her resonance comes from the very blood that flows through her delicate veins, the blood of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The maestro's music, his memories, his every thought and stroke of genius, has poured through Octavia's heart forever since the day they were both bitten in Prague by a Czechoslovakian Countess. Centuries old, the beautiful Octavia has transformed her life time and again, aspiring as one shining Opera star after another, under many names in many places.
She was born Teresa Saporiti in a small Italian village and ran away from home to seek a life of song. Landing in Milan she begins a promising career as her singing talent soon gains for her the life she had always dreamed of. Traveling the world on the opera stage, she finally meets the famous composer Wolfgang Mozart and is entranced by the emotion he weaves into his music. One evening after the curtain falls, sitting next to Mozart and a stunning Countess on his piano bench, Teresa's world soon turns upside down as she feels a sudden bite, and frantically whisks away blood on her throat. With horror she learns she is now a vampire. Mozart was bitten first, followed by Teresa, so now she has shared his blood and will forever have his memories and music pounding her heart and rushing her life blood towards a life of music and living by the thirst. Agelessly moving through time she is Teresa of Milan, America's Helene Singher, Vivian Anderson in Melbourne, and currently Octavia Voss, world's most loved opera queen.
In 1906 while doing her tour in San Francisco, she meets a man who will become her constant companion and protector. His name is Ughetto. Octavia meets this enigmatic handsome man on the docks of the Ferry Building as he emerges out of the fog to tell her he was sent there to watch her by a secret society called La Societa. They are the elders of the vampiric world who watch over their fledglings to ensure that their kind is protected, and that their numbers are kept to a minimum. But as the two new friends endure the tragedy of the 1906 earthquake, Octavia learns that Ughetto also has the gift of voice, and that he too has a hideous secret of his own. In 18th century Tripani Italy, Ughetto was born lupo mannaro, a werewolf.
For this dynamic couple, who although are not lovers, enduring the struggle to survive year after year protecting each other's secrets and sins as they are forced to hunt, drink, and yet shine in the limelight of Opera's most memorable performances, life is precarious. Constantly fleeing from one city to the next, from one century to another as they never grow old, vigilantly keeping themselves from letting loose the demons within them, Ughetto and Octavia cling to their innocence and hide in the shadows when the beasts overcome them and they are forced to drink. Villains chase them wanting immortality, turning their battles into scenes of blood soaked carnage as they are kidnapped, tortured, and forced against their will to transform others into the very dark creatures they have become.
This novel is no chic-lit paranormal romance. This is serious vampire literature and one of the best I've come across in years. Marley's writing is outstanding and very polished. The story bursts with breathtaking passionate scenes of emotional torment, the operatic voices vibrate off the page, her characters are crafted with depth and humanity, and the plot is very inventive. This is a story with soul, one that is a cut above all the rest of the vampire fiction out there now that is being mass produced like paper dolls. Dripping with 18th century history, Mozart's Blood is a sensational read not to be missed for any fans of vampire novels and I personally am hoping for a sequel. Bravo! I stand up and applaud!!!!

You Suck: A Love Story Review

You Suck: A Love Story
Average Reviews:

In You Suck, Christopher Moore returns to the characters who made him famous nearly a decade earlier in his absurdist vampire tale Bloodsucking Fiends. Young newbie vampire couple Jody and C. Thomas Flood are still in the Bay Area, trying to move out of town after imprisoning the 800 year-old-vampire Elijah Ben Sapir in a bronze cast to keep him out of the way. The Animals from Thomas's old stockboy days are still causing trouble, this time with a Vegas call girl of expensive tastes whose skin is dyed blue.
The highlight of the novel is the new character Abby Normal, a moody teenage vampire wannabe who identifies Thomas's otherworldly nature in a drugstore and becomes his minion. Abby is refreshingly naive and eager-to-please as she speaks in gothic prose with her Dark Lord and his Countess Jody. The most winning chapters are told in her gangster/Olde English/squealing teenage voice from her diary.
As a longtime fan, I'm disappointed in Moore's latest effort. The biggest failing is that it is entirely without a plot. The book's entire premise is "a sequel to Bloodsucking Fiends," and one must wonder what kind of cash Moore got from his publishers to take the task on. The only driving force is Jody and Thomas's need to leave San Francisco after promising the homicide cops from the first book that they would do so. The hijinks of the novel center on this flimsy premise, and the effort falls flat. No longer are the absurd situations, darkly humorous banter, and bloodlust perks of great fiction; rather, they are all this novel has, and even the banter gets tiring. Jody and Thomas are constantly "fighting" and making up. Abby Normal is the saving grace of the novel, but even she can't carry it all on her own.
Moore fans will delight in the return of the old detective pair from Bloodsucking Fiends and Practical Demonkeeping, as well as a cameo by Charlie Asher of A Dirty Job. Newbies should definitely choose the masterpiece Lamb as a first Moore work, and then try out his vampire works.

Amaury's Hellion: Scanguards Vampires Review

Amaury's Hellion: Scanguards Vampires

Scanguards Vampires, Book 2
Another winner by Tina Folsom! I enjoyed this book as much as the first book in the Scanguards Vampires series, Samson's Lovely Mortal, where we are first introduced to Amaury. He is Samson's friend and works for him in Samson's security company. He was an enjoyable character in a bad boy way in the first book and I was glad to see he was the focus of the second book.
Amaury is your typical alpha hero but he becomes a big ole softy with Nina. He is protective in that yummy growly way we love to see in our alpha heroes, but Nina is constantly fighting Amaury's need to protect her. She is independent and stubborn and a good match for Amaury. Because of her past she is distrustful of men and resists her attraction to him almost to the end.
As with the first book, the romance between Amaury and Nina includes some snuggling, canoodling and talking, as well as hot sex scenes. Again, the author has done a great job in this area with a hot erotic romance that balances the sex with a suspenseful story while creating a sizzling connection between the main characters.
The secondary characters are also enjoyable and I look forward to their future stories. I like that Samson and Delilah have a fairly significant role in this book. It gives me a sense of their continuing story. I get to see the other secondary characters that I enjoyed in the first book as well and some new characters are introduced who I'm sure we will see in the future. Since the characters do carry over from one book to another, I recommend reading this series in order so you can understand the references and relationships between the characters.
Tina Folsom is officially on my watch list! I eagerly look forward to the next book in this series and her new Greek Gods series coming out this Fall.

Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story Review

Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story

Quick personal note; My wife and I have twin 18 month old boys. I stay home with them during the day and work until 1:30 AM. Time is at a premium in my life right now. There's not much to spare and whatever spare time I can get a hold of would most likely be better spent sleeping. That being said, Christopher Moore's Blood Sucking Fiends hooked me the first night I opened the cover and kept me up until nearly 4AM.
I am a long time fan of horror and it would take quite some book to unnerve me to the point of insomnia. It wasn't a late night case of the heeby-jeebies that kept me up. It was the laughter and engaging characters. Moore has a relaxed witty style that translates to a very fast read. All of the characters in Fiends are incredibly likeable (save one) and the story is humorous and engaging. This fresh take on the joys and advantages of being a vampire set in San Franscisco made me want to walk the city and see the sites. I longed to meet a vivacious red-headed blood sucker who would set me up in an apartment and treat me like a cross between Stoker's Renfield and one of Cher's boy toys. I wanted to take the emperor to lunch with his dogs and become engaged to seven Chinese brothers so they could get their green cards. I wanted to work late nights stocking shelves in a supermarket and go bowling with frozen turkeys. (Oh, wait a sec. I have worked in a supermarket overnight and Moore knows exactly what goes on there.)
Christopher Moore weaves all of the above seamlessly and with great humor and affection to create one of the most enjoyable reads of recent memory. More Moore is on it's way to my house as we speak and I can't wait to read his advice on "Practical Demonkeeping" and see what happens in his world when a giant reptile is awakened by radioactive waste in "The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove".I may have a new favorite author.

The Curse Of Dracula Review

The Curse Of Dracula
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the 1970s, Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan turned "Tomb of Dracula" into one of the most important comics of the decade, helping to usher in a new wave of horror comics.
With this series, they've hit another home run.
Wolfman gets Dracula right, and where many writers struggle to make him an interesting character without sacrificing the most essential characteristics, Wolfman succeeds with ease. The character, as written by him, is a personification of everything one should expect from Dracula. The supporting cast is great as well, with a team of vampire hunters you care about, and an army of vampires that truly horrifies.
The plot is an interesting one, and a logical one. Dracula, in his persuit of power, is manipulating a politician in the race for the Oval Office, stepping on anyone that gets in his way of conquest. This is exactly what I would expect from Dracula in a modern setting, and it's all the more relevant today with the heated political debate that permeates the media today.
Gene Colan's art is a sight to behold. His visuals are spookier now than they ever were before, feeling raw and energetic. There's always something interesting to look at, and I truly wish that other artists knew how to make gothic horror look as good he makes it look.
I'm a huge Dracula fan, and a huge vampire fan, and if you are too, then I highly recommend you pick this up. It's a shame that it's so criminally underrated. I can only hope these two will team up on a new Dracula book some day.

The Letters of Mina Harker (Library of American Fiction) Review

The Letters of Mina Harker (Library of American Fiction)

Bellamy's employment of language is intoxicating: her sentences swirling around like smoke in a fat-bellied glass pipe, the body of her work crackling with the brilliance of a heretofore unknown substance. This modern-day vampire tale set in San Francisco pounds a stake in the heart of literary conventions--transcending form and sexual orientation--and sends my blood rushing. _The Letters of Mina Harker_ is essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary literature.
