This book provides an historically detailed and accurate summary of the photographic record of the building of the San Francisco- Oakland bridge. The authors made great efforts to acccurately document and describe the contents of each reproduced photograph, and are careful in defining sources.
Unfortunately, there is no comparable text which describes how the project came into being, how it was designed, how construction was managed, and the results after completion. A few captions in the book provide a tantalizing glimpse of the failure of mass transit after the bridge opened; and caption references give an introduction to a few sources that may be able to provide more information.
I'm left with the feeling that this story is a key element in the history of the development of mass transit in the United States in the last 60 years; hopefully, someone will have more to say about this.
Four stars for the photographic record (would like to see more of the results of the bridge's operation), one star for the history.
