This is a book written for young adults in the 1940's but trancends readers ages.
A realatively true picture of San Francisco during the gold rush period sets the stage. If you have been to, or never been to the redwoods of northern California this book will leave you with lasting images.
A mining concept not usually associated with the gold rush is the mining of black sand beaches on the California coast, which really did happen. Today would be miners still look for patches of black sand, under the gray sand covering it, that has gold entrapped in it.
A fantastic book, the first time I read it as a teenager, it still inspires me and makes for great reading. Perhaps my own entrapment in the book and story come from my yearly camping trips to the area associated with in the book.
