The Panama Canal opened in August 1914 after 10 grueling, killing years in the tropical Hell that was Panama at that time. Theodore Roosevelt manipulated events so that Panama,a long ignored Colombian province would declare its independence from Colonmbia on Nov. 3, 1903.
That isn't as harsh as it may seem through the prism of 21st century mores. Panama had tried to separate 82 times since it joined Colombia in the 1820s. Panama was not a happy camper. Most of the uprising were put down with U.S. military assistance and many others were thwarted because of U.S. support of Colombia. T.R. was peeved because the Colombian Senate refused to ratify a treaty both countries had negotiated and signed granting the U. S. the right be build a canal. Secondly, TR was never known for his patience. Lastly he was convinced the world needed a canal.
If the U.S. was going to succeed where the French failed, first they had solve the deadly health problems in Panama. Yellow fever, malaria, poluted water were just of a few of the health problems to be conquered. Then there were many giant engineering challenges to build a path to connect the seas. The U.S. succeeded.
"The Pacific Ocean in History: Papers and Addresses" presented at the Panama-Pacific Historical Congress, held in California, July 19-23, 1915 and first published in 1917, captures the excitement and knowledge of the era. This volume has languised at Cornell Library but is now available to all. It is a lodestone of information for budding and mature historians. Wish it had been available to purchase and study at leisure when I wrote my 3 books on Panama.
