I refer to reading hisorical novels as sugar-coated history. Paul Block tells good stories based on much research. With the San Francisco trilogy, he took me through the seminal years of the city. With Beneath the Sky and Darkening of the Light I learned about the problems in China that led to the Boxer Rebellion. His Song of the Mohicans is meant to be a continuation of Last of the Mohicans, and I have read two westerns that he wrote under the name of Hank Mitchum (I know not wny). If the first trilogy weren't as good as it was, I wouldn't have continued. I would read anything he writes, but he hasn't written lately.
