Too many collections of recipes from professional chefs prove disappointing in the home kitchen. In dramatic -- and delicious -- contrast, the five recipes I've tried so far from this book have all been major successes. The coq au vin recipe alone is worth the price of the book. Although I own hundreds of cookbooks, I return to a few favorites most of the time. This terrific new book has earned a place on my "favorites" shelf.

Tony Foster's painting all each amazing. The books is filled with his paintings and essays about his treks around the world. He paints almost exclusively on sight and that in and of itself is inspiration enough. Included are images of his paintings of the Grand Canyon which are considered the largest on sight paintings ever completed. Foster's medium is watercolor, but anyone will enjoy this book, whether painter, art lover or trekker!

Connecting In San Francisco, 693 Great Places To Enjoy Yourself And Meet New People Review

Connecting In San Francisco, 693 Great Places To Enjoy Yourself And Meet New People
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like everyone else I know who has purchased "Connecting in San Francisco," my copy is book marked throughout with "stickies". Sure, as a San Franciscan for six years, I knew of a number of groups and activities. For me, the most fun was learning about the ones I didn't know existed and new groups I wanted to join. I have tried many new pursuits, which have become part of my weekly routine and have vastly enriched my life. Along with recruiting friends to join me in these activities, I have acquired new friends. Most of what I have done required a minimum investment of time and money and the rewards are enormous. It's also interesting to note that this book is of great value to visitors and those who are just in the city on a temporary basis. Many listings are "drop-in" activities like two of my favorites: The San Francisco Art Association's First Thursday Gallery Nights and the free rollerblading lesson and rentals offered by Marina Skate and Snowboard. No matter how obscure you might think your interests are, you will find something in this book. And the joy in trying some new things is in discovering another side of yourself. The authors have done their research. The activities have been great fun and the environments very welcoming!

Describes San Francisco's best groups and organizations for meeting exciting people, exploring new interests, and being your most attractive, balanced self. Perfect for persons who are single and attached, new arrivals, long-term residents and people visiting the city. Not a typical guide book of restaurants and tourist attractions. Rather a book that gives a real flavor of what San Franciscans are about, what they are doing, and how to get involved.

This book is about my husband's grandfather and his church and the struggles of the
Japanese people in general. It's a very well put together book.

Many people driving by elegant Japantown appreciate the graceful architecture of the pagodas and fountains but do not know much about the Japanese community that has long been a vibrant part of San Francisco. Japantown one of only three left in this country began as Nihonjinmachi, or Japanese People s Town, after the first Japanese arrived here in 1869. As their numbers increased, institutions arose to serve them, including churches, schools, and various civic and social organizations. The population drifted through various parts of the city and finally settled in the Western Addition after the 1906 earthquake.

Golden Gate Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Stroll, Bike, Jog, Roll in San Francisco and Marin Review

Golden Gate Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Stroll, Bike, Jog, Roll in San Francisco and Marin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have reviewed lots of travel-related guidebooks over the years, so I can say with some authority that the Golden Gate Trailblazer--the third title in the popular Trailblazer series--is a real find. Although I lived for a number of years in the San Francisco/Marin area, I was simply overwhelmed by the amount of new information I learned about this most wonderful place. The choices of hikes, walks, jogs, and off-road (and sometimes on-road) cycling options are simply overwhelming. The "Best of San Francisco and Marin" section thankfully helps to break down all these choices into dozens of useful categories to help you get to where you want to go faster (for example: Short Walks to High Places; Wildflowers; and Raptors and Woodland Birds; Family Rides; Beach Runs; etc.). The "Free Advise and Opinion" section near the back, while only three pages in length, is nothing short of fabulous in dispensing loads of cryptically written, helpful information and side-splitting humor in equal proportions. And the black-and-white photography throughout the book are stunning in creating a visual sense of place (In my view, the quality of the photos sometimes reaches award-winning status--I would certainly love to see enlargements of some of my favorites!). Including hundreds of trail descriptions, jogging paths, and so forth in a book less than 300 pages long is no mean trick. The Sprouts accomplish this by using a consistent, well-organized, yet compact format, well-selected abbreviations, and carefully crafted yet succinct directions. One important note: This is one book where reading the "How to Use This Book" section will be time well spent. The organization of the book works and works well. But the reader will benefit by taking a moment to orient him or herself. And buying a good street map of the area is another essential, as the authors themselves so indicate. Map drawing, especially in the backcountry of Marin County, is a major challenge and the authors were wise to leave that job to the cartographers. With a copy of the Golden Gate Trailblazer and a good street map in hand you will be ready to explore places you may have never even heard of in a lifetime of living in the Bay Area. And if you are first-time visitors you will be thrilled to have so much well-informed guidance in selecting the activity that is just right for you. And, oh yes, a final tip of the hat to the authors for taking the time to include dozens of good ideas for outdoor exploration for those in wheelchairs and parents who opt to push the little one(s) in a baby stroller.

Harlem of the West - The San Francisco Fillmore Jazz Era Review

Harlem of the West - The San Francisco Fillmore Jazz Era
Average Reviews:

I was getting my car worked on, and took a long stroll from Geary and Masonic all the way to Booksmith on Haight St. I stumbled on this book and was absolutely floored by the amazing photographs, the detailed interviews, and the comprehensive history of the long-lost Fillmore District in full flush. My mother worked in two of the clubs back in the 1940's: the California Theatre Club, which was run by family members, and the New Orleans Swing Room. My mother is 87 now and her eyesight is failing, so I had to read much of the book to her. She remembers all of it. People she went to high school, old friends and workmates. She saw Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Earl Grant, many of the greats before they got their big breaks. My father's submarine came in from the Pacific here, and he immediately started picking out names and faces. It was like old home week for them. The well-known and unknown musicians that made the Fillmore what it was. The book covers how much of this history was literally snatched from the dumpster, so intent were the city fathers on destroying this neighborhood. I remember the Fillmore from about 1968, before the now infamous "Redevelopment" made the Fillmore look like Dresden, gutting a vibrant yet neglected multiracial community. Period photographs fill the book, and contemporary interviews with those who were there flesh out the images - it seems that no one was left out. This is one of the best books I've ever seen about San Francisco, particularly the long neglected history of African-American San Francisco and a city that is, as we speak, vanishing and being replaced with a facade of what people think San Francisco should be like.

A Year of Mud and Gold: San Francisco in Letters and Diaries, 1849-1850 Review

A Year of Mud and Gold: San Francisco in Letters and Diaries, 1849-1850
Average Reviews:

Would you like to have seen the Bay Area when it was still wilderness? When Elk and grizzlies roamed the hills of Marin County, and the native wildflowers grew so thick on the slopes of Angel Island that their perfume was almost nauseating? Perhaps you'd just like a chance to have been in San Francisco when you could still buy a lot in the Financial District for $200?In The Year of Mud and Gold, William Benemann gives you the chance to experience all that and more. Through the journals and letters of California's first American settlers, we are able to re-live California's glory days. Like Benemann's editorial commentary, most of the letters are extraodrdinarily well-written, and paint a vivid picture not only of the Paradise that was the Bay Area, but also of daily life in the frenzied early years of the Gold Rush when were trying to create a new society and civilization in a wild land where the only law was that of supply and demand.

San Francisco Then and Now (Compact) (Then & Now Thunder Bay) Review

San Francisco Then and Now (Compact) (Then and Now Thunder Bay)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book offers an excellent photographic perspective of San Francisco's past and present. Photos from the 1850's even up to the early 1960s (in the case of Diamond Heights) are shown along with photos of what a particular area of SF looks like today. While this book is a testament to how much the city has grown and changed over the last 150 years, it also shows how resilient it was after the earthquake and fire in 1906 that virtually leveled it.
It also makes the reader ponder a little about what life must have been like in San Francisco around the turn of the 20th century. Among the areas shown? The Marina district, Pacific Heights, Market St and the ferry building, several panoramas of the city, the Golden Gate bridge (during contruction and how it appears today), and Nob Hill.
Not only are the photos spectacular, but it also offers some history about "the city by the bay" and how some parts of it have changed dramatically and others might still be recognizable to those who visited 50 years ago. An excellent pictorial coffee table book about the city I'm lucky enough to live near.

Lizzie Newton and the San Francisco Earthquake (History Speaks: Picture Books Plus Reader's Theater (Quality)) Review

Lizzie Newton and the San Francisco Earthquake (History Speaks: Picture Books Plus Reader's Theater (Quality))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ten-year-old Lizzie Norton awoke with a start and sat up in bed. She had been dreaming that she was on a train that was lurching up and down on its tracks, yet all the while the shaking was real. Her eyes widened in the darkness of the morning. She ran to her Grammy's room only to find her injured and covered with plaster. It was not safe inside so they hurriedly put on some clothes and went into the streets of San Francisco where a horrible scene of destruction awaited them. Many of the buildings "lay crumbled in heaps," while flames leapt from the rooftops of others. People were frantically trying to leave the city.
Lizzie was afraid and didn't know quite what to do, but when "an ambulance wagon came clattering down the street," she hailed it. As Grammy boarded the ambulance, she told Lizzie to go home. She soon was on foot headed for home. The aftershocks were frightening and startling "cracks and holes were still opening near Lizzie's feet." She spotted firemen digging through piles of bricks. She could hear the cries of people beneath the rubble as the men struggled to save them. The fires were rampant, communication was nonexistent, and the water pipes had burst. They encouraged Lizzie to head for home, but when she arrived, her house too had been partially destroyed. She had to keep moving on to St. Francis in Union Square. Would she find her parents when she got there? Would she even survive the trek?
This is a stunningly realistic, fictionalized portrait of Lizzie, a young girl who survived the San Francisco Earthquake. The storyline is exciting and even the most reluctant reader will strive to reach the end of the book to find out what happened to young Lizzie. The full color, full page artwork captures the essence of the horrifying event and subtly conveys a lot of information the text does not discuss. For example, in a street scene we see cracks in the earth, people clustered in groups, while others have gathered up some of their belongings and are escaping on foot or in a horse drawn wagon. This edition introduces the student to Reader's Theater. It gives full instructions on how a performance goes, what to do before, and after the production. The eight-page script can be reproduced for the six performers. A link to the sound effects is given. Undoubtedly, this amazing book would be a unique, fun, highly educational way to introduce your classroom to Reader's Theater!
